so how does the tractor know that the rear wheels are slipping?

theres some sort of diffrential clutch between the front wheels (which wouldnt be moveing) and the rears which are?

I don't believe that's how it works. When you engage 4WD, the drive shaft to the front differential turns (without any regard as to rear wheel slippage). Since the front wheels are driven through a differential, they both only get power until one slips and then the one that is slipping gets all the powerunless you have a limited slip front differential. On my 2120 when I overload the bucket, I can get the tractor up on one front wheel (carefully) and still back up with 3 wheels off the ground. On my TN, when I engage the electro hydro differential lock, it locks both axles, hence true 4WD. And yes, it is tuff to steer.

My TN70A (8x8 with power shuttle) does not have the elctro hydro diff. My only diff lock is my rear wheels with the heel peddle. Your setup spounds nice.
