New TN75, so far so good except for the rear brakes. They work fine when applied lightly, tractor slows down, no noise. When I apply the brakes fairly hard, they make a grinding, nasty noise. They stop the tractor fine, but just sound awful. Doesn't matter if in forward or reverse, same nasty noise.

Any else experienced this or have any ideas what the cause is? Only 5 hours on this unit, but it aint gettin no better.

Thanks,

Alan

Alan, as soon as I saw the title of your post, I knew it was about a new tractor. That noise, like a really bad binding/rubbing, is common on new New Holland tractors. Mine did it for at least the first 200 hours. The more you use the brakes, the better it will get and eventually go away. That "problem' has been mentioned several times in this forum, but I don't remember seeing it about a TN75 before. You may be the first to report it.

Knock on wood... Neither of the TN75's I've had had noisy brakes.

Jim,

Thanks for the reply. I am hoping that that is all it is and will go away with time. I have "exercised" the brakes a little to break them in, but did that did not change anything. Like I said, they work fine, but that noise sounds like a slip clutch on an implement gearbox when it slips, not the sound I would expect from a wet disc brake. Oh well, I can live with it and just hope it eventually wears in and shuts up.

I talked to a NH mechanic this morning and he said that a couple of years ago, the TN's had the brake noise problem, but they changed the brakes in newer models and the problem should have been fixed. I guess I just got some old barakes.

Take Care,

Alan

I'm with Andy as our TC40D never made a grunt either.

Of course you want to get something in writing to/from the dealer saying they heard about this from you in the early hours of the tractor's life. If it turns out to be something other than "break-in" you'll be covered for warranty.

This is from NH's dealer service web site. Does not look like it would be covered under warranty but it would make the noise go away I would assume.

Under operating conditions where the rear brakes are constantly being applied, the production brake disc material has a tendency to chatter or squeal.

To resolve the concern install Kevlar brake discs.

I would get the dealer to change the hydraulic oil and filter, and add New Holland anti-chatter additive to the new oil. The noise could be caused by contaminated or out-of-spec oil, not an actual brake problem. Something to try before a brake overhaul.

Rick,

I had not heard of the anti-chatter additive. That sounds like a good idea. I will talk to the dealer again and run this by them. That would be a real simple solution if it works. Now all I have to do is figure out if it is worth the drive of 150 miles each way to the dealer. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Thanks for the idea,

Alan
