Watched this old timer get his 8n out of the mud (floating on its belly stuck) by using a heavy duty rope (my guess it was a piece of 1" moring line that they use to tie up ships with) wrapped around the axle just inside of the rear wheel in a manner that as he spun the tires in reverse, it would pull the rope and the other end was tied to a tree. He sat on the tractor and in low range he would let the clutch out and pull on the rope. That tractor was slow coming out, but she walked right up out of that mud hole.

Wish I had a camera with me when I stopped to help him. He just told me stay out of the way that he would get out himself.

Like using a capstain or cathead he said.

I have not had to try this as I have always been able to push my way out with the FEL (one reason that in 7 years of owning my tractor, the FEL has never been off the tractor. I still have not found a reason to take it off.)and I have been to the belly in mud rototilling gardens.

i was grubbing out brush next to the old house on the property (with no gutters) right after a good summer thunderstorm ... hey i figured the ground would be soft and easy to grub the brush out....

well it was... but a little 2 soft and after a few passes i had berried the front end up to the axle is soft gooy mud.

i wasnt going anywere in 4wd locked.... but a little manuvering with the FEL and i was out.... i waited a couple of days before going back and cleaning up my mess and hole i made...

ive gotten my 4wheel drive pickup stuck 4wheeling many times. i have a winch and recovery gear for this exact "problem"

with a 8K # winch, 100' of cable and a snatch block, there isnt much (normal) vehical wise i cant unstuck on my own...

I have come to the conclusion that when I changed from turf tires to the ag's a friend gave me, that the two inches I lost in height was something I really need if I want to keep from getting stuck. Since I don't want to go purchasing more tires and rims, I think my old idea of duels might be a way to go, plus maybe removing, or at least shortening the drawbar, which seems to allways get hung up.
With yesterdays stuck, there were no trees around, and all the comealong did was drag my p/u to the tractor. Adding the old one ton Ford truck to the mix gave me enough anchor to pull it out.

I think I might investigate drilling holes in the rims so I can put a chain thru to give me a place to add a block or bar so it will raise itself out.

Once, my brother got the 8N stuck, got the "A" John Deere to pull out the 8N, got it stuck, got the "60" John Deere to pull out the "A". Had them all in to about the rear axles. Dad worked in town and came home that night, as he turned into the drive his headlights lit up all three. He came in house and ask if we planted them hoping to grow a larger tractor. ( NOT happy at all )
Went out with enough 1/2" cable to reach a 3 foot diameter tree along side the drive, wrapped the axle of the "A" and attached to spoke. Locked the opposite brake, put it low gear and waited till it was on dry ground. Then with longer chains and "his" experience got the other two out.
Funny now, but was **** to pay back then and us younger brothers had do with it in the first place.

Done that using a tow chain often; many years ago. My father advised me to use reverse as it reduced the chances of flipping the tractor.
(Back then we'd never heard of ROPS.)

An added benefit to using reverse to unstuck the tractor: You most likely got it stuck going forward...reverse should have less obstruction.

I'll bet that if you asked that ol' boy where he learned to do that, he would probably tell you he learned it in the Army. That technique came right out of the old Vehicle Recovery Field Manual. If you have an Army Surplus store in the area see if they have one. For anyone working with heavy equipment, that would be a great book to add to your library.
