To Cab or not to Cab

"the only ones who "don't" want a cab are the ones who are making excuses as to why they "don't" want a cab because they can't afford one."

Whats even more interesting is that someone would believe that. There are times a cab is beneficial and times it would be a royal pain in the bum. Your needs and weather I would suggest have far more to do with it then your pocketbook.
Making a statement like your dealer made could also be taken as: those with cabs are flaunting their wealth which of course is also ludicris.

The only reason I say "cab" is that he's in the interior of Florida....HOT. If I could have A/C, I'd take it. However, for any other conditions, I'd opt no cab. I get on and off too much and I like the open feeling. So for me, no cab unless the conditions are brutal.

( I won't have trees that close together and trimming around the house I'll do with a walk-behind mower. I will be sprinkling and using St. Augustine or some other type of non-pasture grass. I won't have a bagging option with the model (not that bagging would be practical anyway with this amount of land) so I will need to mow twice a week during the summer months (read 5 to 6 months, around here). )

Under your circumstances .... get the cab. Your yard conditions are almost identical to mine ( except I have lots of trees) and I can't understand why anyone would want to spend any more time than they have to sweating in 90 degree heat. My M-I-L and S-I-L who live at the farm say they hate cab tractors but, ofcourse, they have never really worked one for 8 hours ... and say it's, "just more things to go wrong". Strange though that neither of them will drive 10 minutes to the grocery store without having the A/C blasting. If you want the outdoors, fresh air experience, go sit on the porch with a beer or run round the place on the ATV or even walk. Unless there is some overwhelmingly compelling reason NOT to get a cab, I don't see why you wouldn't want to take advantage of progress and make the experience a little more enjoyable.

He (the dealer) did point out that even his "poorest" farmers almost exclusively go with cabs. Whether it is the farmer himself, or a hired hand, in the hay business the (farmer / farm hand - you pick) is much more productive in a 10 to 14 hour shift when not subject to the elements. Therefore, the poorest farmers flaunt that they are poor because they use cab tractors to increase the productivity of their workers because they can't pay for them to stop and rest when over-heated or covered with bugs, or they are itching so much that they are stopping to scratch etc.?

The same goes for our local coal mine operations. Do you really think that the mine cares about the "appearance" of them having all their dozers and other heavy equipment having cabs? It is solely for the increased productivity that can be gotten from the operator when not subjected to the elements.

The dealer's comments likely would have been taken better if they conveyed these facts of the increased productivity of the operators of cab tractors vs. the productivity of operators in open air tractors. Heck, I can survive living under the oak tree out back. However, I'll be much more productive the next day at work after living in my climate controlled house. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Some good pros and cons for a cab on your new Kubota L3430. I have a 3430 and went with the cab. I have never regretted it. However, I see more temperature extremes up here in Minnesota. I am happiest with the cab on a cold winter day when I am out snow plowing.

I mow with a 90" RFM. See attached picture. No power problems whats so ever.

Rolando,

I recently considered a CAB as it gets pretty nippy in NW Arkansas and July and August are toasty. For all the reasons above, it would be awesome. It also rains, on very short notice, a LOT in Florida. It might be good for keeping you dry. I'd get one for the A/C alone.

But, I would have destroyed, and I do mean destroyed, a CAB when using it for work in the woods or felling trees. It doesn't sound like that is your intended use, so you should be fine.

Good luck.

I think out here in California it comes down to homeowners are cabless, farmers have cabs and the orchards don't even have ROPS. The weather here just isn't extreme enough for most of us homeowners doing our typical homeowner stuff to really get excited about a cab. The local dealers must know this as very rarely do you ever see cab models. Convertibles and motorcyles come out in droves once the rain stops. Now that I see Rolando needing to mow twice a week, thats basically doing 8 acres, he may well want to consider the cab especially if his weather is that hot and I suspect very humid. I think it's probably more important for the older folks as well. All this talk about cab necessity makes me appreciate my climate that much more. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I think a cab would be real nice for those just peeing down rain days, but for myself I would opt for the 5K going towards a backhoe as someone else mentioned.

If you have the money and want a cab BUY IT!! You can't take the money with you and you might as well enjoy life while you are here on earth.
