To hoe, or not to hoe...

I feel like I'd end up using it a few times, then never needing it again. Sure would be nice, occasionally. But for me I'm thinking just rent like some of the others...or get creative and do it with what I might already have even if it's not the ideal tool.

I have a hoe on my 4320. It gets sporadic use at best. But there are of jobs that just wouldn't be doable without it. Mostly I have dug big post holes, pulled stumps and trenched with it. If it's handy, it can be nice for craning items up to about 800lbs. It was expensive, but I was able to swing it because I was able to include it with the tractor financing. I could have paid the tractor off by now if I had passed on the hoe, though.

I've made enough money with mine to cover the cost of it.

Mark,

You have 12-20 acres so whats the nature of your ground, what do you want to do? With that sort of acreage I would want a hoe, but it depends on your situation and needs.

If you have mostly grassland, few trees, and minimal rocks then a hoe is a "nice to have" as other implements can get the job done. On the other hand if you have trees, rocks, walls to build, wood to cut, ditches to dig, shrubs to plant and so on - get a hoe..

the first few times it took me a long time to put the hoe back one but after that I started to use the stabilizers to lift the hoe up pretty high and then lower it into place. If you lower one and not the other it will slide from side to side. I use plywood so it doesn't rip up the concrete floor. I can also back into it and the tabs will guide it into place.
With out plywood its a scary prospect for the garage floor!

And to answer the original question
get the hoe with a thumb. Nothing is better for bucking trees.
How many things will do do because you have one or not do because you'd have to rent? With the new finance rates its pretty easy to give them an extra 6k!

As others stated if my property was developed I would not need as much. I have really enjoyed and used mine. Dug out area for pole barn. Dug out stumps, rocks, installed drainage pipe, culverts, great to remove small trees and counter balance for grapple. I am glad I got mine with Tractor. I is easy to get on and off.

I think this is a very personal choice. You have to look at your landscape and what you want to do.

I personally would find a loader useless without a backhoe. The two make a great combination.

To give you an example This spring my basement flooded. I found out that my footing drain pipe had been clogged. I had to dig up about 50 feet of pipe and lay in new pipe. This would have been all but impossible without a backhoe.

I now have an L39 TLB which is a great combination because I can take off the hoe and use my wood chipper or box blade etc....

Naw, the toughest choice is whether or not to share seat time with your significant other if ya have one. Of course, some here use that as an excellent reason to buy another dedicated significant other tractor :D .
