To hunt or to work....that is the question.

I tend to be in line with others in that I try to find a balance between the work and hunting. Sometimes it actually pays off big time.

I am fortunate to have several areas to deer hunt including my place where I keep a few stands. Through the years I have only been able to get a few does on my land, but grateful for them nonetheless. Never saw anything more than a crotch horn and that was off season. Sitting in the stand one morning with the intent of only staying for a couple hours in order to get back and do chores, I was sitting there thinking about how I needed to be splitting wood. The feeling gnawed at me for over an hour. I eventually got down and headed home. On the trail back, a 10 pointer came strolling through the woods. If I stayed in the stand, I never would have seen him. His rack is now in my den with a nameplate under it that says "The Firewood Buck"

Great story. Thanks for sharing. Back I CA, I hunted on a friends place and his dad would cut firewood during the middle of the day during deer season. He saw more bucks then we did a lot of the time. They either just ignored the noise he was making and became used to it as something normal, or where attracted to it and came to see what he was doing.

Deer are very curious critters.
Here in Quebec it is illegal to hunt within a certain distance of lumbering operations.
For one the noise* attracts the deer, and also felled tree 'canape' encourages the the growth of young tender growth the deer feed on.

On the other hand luring deer with loads of apples and carrots is a well practiced technique as is blocks of salt.
(Wardens seem to no longer enforce the baiting law, guess too many hunters pled that they unaware of bait being there, "What bait? no not me your honor, I was just walking and gee, a buck popped up, what bait?, I'd never do that."

*Now that we no longer have wind chimes the deer don't eat our hosta plants.
