To hunt or to work....that is the question.

I'm not much of a hunter, and most of it is because I find that it bothers me (a lot) to simply sit and wait for something to shoot to come by. I get much greater satisfaction from working on a project at home than I do for killing an animal.

I'm not opposed to hunting at all, I just personally find it to be time wasted. As long as one enjoys the peace and solitude and the time spent doing it, then that is all that matters.

Good luck and take care.

I also don't hunt - anymore. I've never been much on hunting deer - we have them roaming around our place every day. But dove and quail? Yep - loved it. As I age though, killing things other than for food isn't something that I appreciate.

If I were making the rules of hunting though, I'd ban the use of firearms. Hunting with a knife or bow would seem more like a even match. If that were the case though, I'm afraid that I would have never killed a single dove or quail; I'm not that good at throwing rocks :)

I have no problem with those that do IF they eat what they kill. I came to dislike those that renege on getting work done instead of hunting. One contractor that I used stopped in the middle of building a workshop for me to take the week off to hunt turkeys. When one shirks promises made to do work they need to specify before any contracts have been signed as to days off, completion dates, etc. But to just shut down a job in the middle for the pleasure of hunting... nah, they should be, and were penalized.

But, for those that do hunt (for the right reasons), best of luck to you. Meanwhile, I'll enjoy piddling around the place here on my Kubota and with my chainsaw. I'll do my sitting on a nice soft couch in a nice air conditioned house with no ticks, chiggers, or mosquitoes.

The question is which will cause you more guilt? Not making progress on a project, or doing nothing, relaxing and enjoying your land? I've found that working on my land is almost the same thing as hunting on it. I'm always happier with finishing a project then I am hunting, but having said that, i still try to get in my blind as often as I can deal with the guilt of not being productive. The battle is real!!!!

Besides, Eddie, while hunting from your blind you can plan out your projects.
That way there is no guilt.

Nailed it Eddie, besides, enjoying my land = working it or on it.
No wild hogs here, are they good eating? Sure would give me a new perspective if I could go out and shot some bacon & ham:laughing:

Designed my house from a deer stand... Who knows how many deer walked on by!

The wood stove in the center of the house will sit exactly where one of my tree stands was. I sat there with trees all around planning how things would be set up. Took those ideas to an architect and had him walk up there with my wife and I to look at the lay of the land. From time to time I will ponder a thing or two that I have to do but for the most part, when hunting, I just exist in the moment.

Yes, the ones in the picture are perfect sized for eating. We also make our own dog food and if we are low on wild pork, we will buy pork from Sams club for dog food. The really big boars are not very good eating, so they all end up in the crock pot as dog food. Nothing goes to waste, but we're picky on what we eat.

An interesting thing is that wild hogs are very lean, and they taste completely different then domestic pigs. We also think that wild hog meat, that is less then a hundred pounds live weight, is better tasting then a whitetail. We don't shoot does here, so that might make a difference, but comparing a young pig to a legal buck, it's not even close.

I just wish I had more hunting choices up North! There just turkeys, some quail and deer. Kinda of boring if you ask me.

Its kinds hard to be hunting when you know there something could be doing at home, but than again little time away from project list makes one eager to gat back at project list.

I ran into an old school mate at a flea market. He was selling things to survive. Said he was trying to make it through hunting season before he looked for a job.
