To keep and repair or run away?

Any further information? I'm not being a smart-***, just sincerely asking for some more insight on how this could cause bogging and stuttering when mowing.

I'm not expecting too much from this tractor am I? From my research before, and after purchasing, they put up ~35 drawbar hp, which at 7hp/ft should be enough to pull a 5' mower through decent grass. Right?
Your motor is running at a certain RPM. When you hit the grass, the load slows the RPMS (bogs the motor). The governor increases the throttle opening, increasing power to maintain the RPM. If this doesnt work, the motor will bog and die.

Not saying it is the problem, but, along with the other things suggested could be and must be checked. Simple way is to high idle the motor then put a load on it and see if it idles up.

Second thing I would look for right away is the points and point gap being good (if you still have points). If they are bad or maladjusted, it will lose power under load very quickly.

I have had 2 ford tractors that had crud floating in the bottom of the tank. It would run fine, for days or minutes depending on the mood of the tractor. I took the tank out and had it flushed. I have not had a problem since and I now do it every time I fix of buy a old tractor.

an 800 series should be able to drag a 5' mower to it's death.
^This. A 6V 8N should be able to handle decent grass with a 5' 'hog; an 800 shouldn't have any problems at all. My dad just acquired a 960 (more or less a row-crop version of the 800-series), and it had no problems at all cutting heavy grass (fence line of a bermudagrass hay field) with a 5' brush hog. I previously ran the fence line with that same brush hog on a 12V 8N, and it had no problems at all...

yep.. a 48ish hp setup should power up a 6' mower easilly.. and take a 5' thru anything the front axle can almost mash down.

Unscrew the plug out of the bottom of the carb and make sure you have plenty of fuel flow (let it run for 20 seconds)- if not much flow, then you have some crud in the tank, line or float valve seat.

With mostly blocked flow, the engine will idle and run good, but under load it cannot get as much gas as it needs.
