To Save A Cow

I'm glad to see some people still care about their animals. You usually hear all the bad stuff. Hope she makes out OK, please let us know how she does, I know I will appreciate knowing.

Thanks
Steve

Great Job! And not an easey one. You give farming a good name. Keep up the good work.

I'm real glad to read your story and see your pics. Sorry about the calf, as I've been there myself, but I'm touched to find another person who feels like my wife and myself about their animals. Way too many people would not have done what you did, and are doing. I sincerely hope your momma cow makes it OK, and I'm proud to be your fellow poster in here!

Good luck with that cow. I know how hard it is to bring them back around. We had a Jersey's calf get turned around while trying to deliver. The head is all that got turned and as you can imagine that is not going to help anything. We could not pull the calf out and when we tried to push the calf in to turn the head the mom pushed back. So we had to use a comealong and attach it to the calves legs that were out and slowly put pressure on it until we could finally get the calf out. This Jersey freshened early and no one expected her just yet. In the end though, she went thru so much and could not recover and had to be put down. So I wish you the best with your animal and hopefully she will pull thru.

Don,

I'm sorry to hear about the cow and calf. I hope the cow is OK. We've lost one calf this year and had another injured, both by cayotes. They seem bigger this year, more aggressive and there seems to be more of them. They run the new born calves and force them to stop, start and turn quickly until their undeveloped legs and joints give out and then .....

I know you shouldn't get too attached to your animals but you can't help it, can you? The only way I've been able to handle it all these years is to think of it as natural selection at work, part of a bigger plan. I know that's not much comfort but the rational behind it is the crutch that's got me by.

Let us know how she's doing.

txdon,
We used to have a cow walker just for this purpose but we continually had people barrowing it and it got away. They will work about 50% of the time at best. It works just like a baby walker. It is work to save a cow like this but that beats losing $800-1000. I've also seen a cow hoist that could be mounted in a barn but this means feeding and watering her at least twice a day.

I just talked with my friend (The guy holding the rope) who owns the cow and she is still alive. He says she is making progress and seems to be more alert. The Vet gave her some medicine. She still is not standing on her own. They are bracing her up for a while and then letting her rest several times a day.

Right before I picked her up I was thinking that maybe I should put the grapple bucket on to hold her in place but I guess she was so scared and once I lifted her she did not move. The move turned out better than I thought. The 7" teeth extending from the front of the bucket helped to get under her so the bucket would not pinch her and they also help support her for the trip to the trailer. #3 is one of the friendlier cows and was always the first in line to eat the range cubes out of my hand, I hope she makes it. Thanks for all the kind feedback.

My friend does not have a FEL and commented after the move that he needed to get one for his tractor.

Good job.

Did she pass the calf or did it have to be pulled.

Hope she makes it out.

We've got a 'pet' longhorn.. even named it. I know when she.. or any of our animals get hurt.. we go take care of them.. even the chickens. if I can save an animal.. and be safe.. then it's usually worth it to try.
