If you cover your wood on the top- a drenching rain doesn't soak into the top layer. Wood stays dryer. Also works the same for snow/melt cycles. Sides open allow the wood to breathe. I cover the side with the driving rain/snow.

I cut my wood very late winter early spring.. the wife has it all split before long after that..Then stacked in a windrow.. We have never covered the wood and it is always dry for burning,, 10 to 20 % after being inside for a few weeks,, We stack 4 cord in the basement for the winters use,,

It just seems to me that if your trying to remove the "sap" that makes wet wood if it's deluded with water for a while this helps.. Like the farmers around here used to do in the old days,,They would put the limbed trees in the pond for a month then buck it up and let it dry,, ???

They say if you fell a tree in full leaf, a lot of the moisture will exit through them. They sure do wilt in a hurry! Not sure if any is coming out of the vesicles, though.

Wikipedia says (transpiration) "A fully grown tree may lose several hundred gallons of water through its leaves on a hot, dry day. About 90% of the water that enters a plant's roots is used for this process."

I see a high school science project here. (first prize is a moisture meter:thumbsup:)

You are cutting your wood when it is pretty dry standing, and splitting it. Also stored in the basement helps too. Mine is outside. I buy my wood- don't have enough hardwood and time to cut myself. I usually get it in August or September. I am never quite sure what it will be until it arrives. The "dry" wood sometimes arrived without having split on the ends yet. I think often it is cut in April when the sap has started running. I used to find myself trying to get the last bit of drying time before it went into the stove. Buying a year ahead is my way of not worrying about it.
It sounds like you have a good system that works well for you. That's what counts. I can't say one is better than another. We just do what works and offer it up as a possibility.
