If you cover your wood on the top- a drenching rain doesn't soak into the top layer. Wood stays dryer. Also works the same for snow/melt cycles. Sides open allow the wood to breathe. I cover the side with the driving rain/snow.
I cut my wood very late winter early spring.. the wife has it all split before long after that..Then stacked in a windrow.. We have never covered the wood and it is always dry for burning,, 10 to 20 % after being inside for a few weeks,, We stack 4 cord in the basement for the winters use,,
It just seems to me that if your trying to remove the "sap" that makes wet wood if it's deluded with water for a while this helps.. Like the farmers around here used to do in the old days,,They would put the limbed trees in the pond for a month then buck it up and let it dry,, ???
