so someone at some point removed the orig starter solenoid and the rod that comes from the shifter, is there a way to get a new rod?? I found the solenoid but have had no luck finding that rod. thanks Matt

If you can't fabricate one perhaps you can find one on a website dealing especially with old tractors. By the way, I think it's a Ferguson. I think Harry was selling them after he broke off from Ford but before he went in with Massey.

what is the purpose of a rod going from the shifter to the starter solenoid?. that's baffling, as there don't seem to be a useful purpose in doing that.. why not just use a modern solenoid?..

you use the shifter to start the motor. when you push it forward it uses a rod to move a cam that pushes on the starter solenoid.

ah a very early neutral safety switch.. I've been reading it's easy to drop the rod into the clutch bell housing, yours could be sitting there..

It's a safety issue. You use the transmission shifter to actuate the starter switch so you can't start it in gear.

Agree with an earlier post. I bet the rod just fell down when the previous owner was replacing the start solenoid. I almost dropped the rod myself! Get something long and magnetic and fish a round inside with the starter solenoid removed.

Agree with the magnetic pickup or even a coat hanger bent for a hook. The rod attaches high and to the right of centerline. Easy access if you take the steering off, but thats a lot of work. May have to if you fabricate a rod. If I remember correctly its just a small rod with a 90 deg bend on each end and hole for cotter pin. The adjustment is sliding the switch mount forward/aft, slotted mounting holes.
