Today's disaster - rethinking HST

I dont think I would blame the hydro for this. This is operator error trying to mow a 35 degree slope with a Craftsman lawn tractor( read your manual ) . You are bringing a knife to a gun fight ! Thankfully you were not hurt .

I do understand his questioning. There is no doubt a hydro is easier to drive on a slope as you dont have to clutch to go from forward to reverse. But the question is, How is it designed? Can it leave low and jump to neutral should a load get pushing the tracktor and no traction loss. I operated heavy equipment on 45 and up % slopes using forwarders, and excavators and harvestors. All were hydraulic driven, no problem, the the weight and gearing is there. I am curious myself with the compact tractors, whether they will slip out of gear. That being said, we have nearly a dozen J5 bombardiers and they are geared really low. However, some did slip out of 2nd gear from time to time, and would be dangerous if on a hill. As well we had those 230 timberjack skidders and they were known for it. so a geared tractor will, but in low enough gear I do feel safe. I'm just curious myself as I recently purchased a mahindra 2816hst, and some of my family uses it, and Im nervous , even on a sloping grade if they are hauling anything heavy. we dont have the experience with that little tract yet to know if it could slip out of gear.

Clutch is fine for a slope...you just have to stop (!!!!) before shifting, even with synchro transmissions. What you don't want to do is get stuck in neutral and be sliding down that slope.

Neutral is the safest gear in this instance and stay off of the brake. If it had been put in neutral at the top of the slope it wouldn't be sliding sideways throwing the operator off.

Neutral provides no engine braking. Shifting to a lower gear does...although I agree, that should be done at the TOP of a slope.

Ya gotta be smarter then the tractor... Of course, with wet grass, all bets are off. The only smart thing then is to stay off the slope.

I did not read all of the postings but I agree, OPERATOR ERROR for sure !

You missed the whole point of the rule that says " The wheels with the least traction always take the lead".

Braking with the engine or the brake pedal is what caused the rear to come around.
