They're not always that bad. This job was easy:

Just an overgrown lot in town. Just grass, thick at times, but nowhere was it taller than my hood.

Another "easy" one. Just grass, very few objects hidden in the grass, few large rocks but I could see the ground through most of this and could spot them.

This one was just thick grass, with a few rocks. Hard to see them with how thick the grass was. Easy job though, just a utility right of way job. It was just a large area.

Here's a pallet I found:

It used to be on that stack of pallets to the right. Wind or thoughtful passer-by tossed it onto the ground. Found that without "magic", too. Made a bunch of noise when I found it though. Bucket went right over that one too.

2 hrs yesterday on The MX5200 with the chain mower on back. Neighbors field was 7 ft tall in places, very thick mustard stands. We finally got a little rain and the cooler weather, I wanted to cut without fire hazard as it was all dried out.
No pics of the work but here is the chain mower. Slashed the heck out of everything.

Just finished building a small one for my excavator. Still needs painting.

The plan is to use it on some tall embankments that I can't reach with the tractor. I built a flail cutter for the excavator a couple years ago. Worked ok but it's just too heavy.

That is a handsome beast! Tell us about the hydraulic motor, flow rate and rpms?

I happen to have two Parker F11 5cc piston motors. One is being used as pump for the aux circuit.

The other one is what's on the cutter.

At 2500 engine RPM, I get about 2000 RPM on the cutter. It worked ok with the flail. I think it'll be fine in this cutter as well.

Not a tremendous amount of power but the whole thing is powered by a small 17hp Kubota D640 engine. Eventually I would like to upgrade to a 25 HP air cooled diesel engine. A Lombardini, Deutz or similar.

I ran my engine speed up to 2500-2600 while using the chain mower yesterday and today. That is very close to PTO 540 rpm marker and the mower cut better than it had previously on lower rpms. #7 hardened chain holding up well so far, may get a second season out of them before replacement.

These cutters with chains use a 1:1.92 ratio gearboxes. If I recall correctly from other threads, yours has 1:1 or close to anyway. You'd be even more happier with the results with the 1:1.92 gearbox.

Once you replace the chains, go with grade 80 chains, although I wouldn't trust welding them. That is the correct chain to run on these type of cutters.

The ones on my cutter for the tractor have been there for around 300 hours of brush cutting and since I tend to run the cutter just about 1 to 1.5" off the ground, it tends to hit dirt a lot and cause premature wear, other wise it would last even longer.

The cutter for the tractor uses 1/2" chain and the cutter for the excavator uses 3/8". I do have two spare sets for the tractor.

After 6 weeks of drought, we finally got some rain, so I broke out the old Ferguson Yardmaker to do some overseeding yesterday. It was a little wet, but I can't afford to be too picky. Was just glad to have enough moisture to get the tines to penetrate.

Took me about a half hour to scrape all the mud/grass build up off the drum.

NOTE: The author in NO WAY endorses operating tractors with ROPS in lowered position, especially when using heavy, ground-engaging attachments on the three-point hitch.
