Greg, your tribute was touching and glad you had the chance to handle this in such a loving manner.
Very sorry for your loss.
The burial would be considered "green" in many areas, a growing trend to avoid the marketing from funeral homes.
Thanks to you, and to all, for your condolences.
Daugen, yes, a 'Green Burial' is the catch phrase they use these days, and I try to avoid the use of catch phrses when possible... Dad's intrest in going this route was more philosophical-based, and many years of environmental activism, and strong feelings of being a good steward of the earth... he has spent the last 10+ years fighting the 'big money ' that comes with shale gas drilling, pushing for responsible operations of all aspects of the process, from the trucking and heavy traffic issues on small country roads, to the effects on surface and ground water the local wildlife and people depend on, to the air and noise pollution from compressor stations that will roar away for years to come, pushing the gas extracted by the wells to the processing plants.
Dad has gone so far as to install a solar panel array and grid-tied inverter system, and just a few months ago, bought a full electric powered car, charged from his solar panels.
Many years ago, about 1988, I recall his efforts to curb the importing of out-of-state garbage to our local landfill. The local owner sold out to a NYC corporation, and the influx of trash multiplied over night. Dad, and a group of others, worked hard to get some limits enstated, and pertinent rules made and enforced. He spent many years as a board member of our county Solid Waste Authority.
His efforts and influence on many people is evident by outpouring of recognition by so many people these past few days. Many, including me, will miss him, in so many ways.
