The grain IS awesome! To be honest... not sure. I got a couple of 8ft by about 8 to 10in wide 4/4 rough sawn boards from a friend for free, long ago. A lot of warp and twist and lots of stress still in them! Decided I would waste too much jointing and planing the long boards so they have just been sitting. I never really noticed the grain until last weekend when I was re arranging my crowded shop and took a closer look. What is the light wood? The grain is great.
Anyways, I think it is oak but I am actually not sure because I haven't seen grain like that before. The finish is just linseed oil and a little beeswax, so that is the natural wet look! I thought it was pretty cool.
The black walnut has sentimental value. Reclaimed from a solid wood circa 1960 modern design bookcase that my father built. I recently sold his old Craftsman Radial Arm Saw that hadn't been turned on in 15 years. That sentimental departure inspired me to start making gifts for family using the black walnut in his memory.
