What is the light wood? The grain is great.
The grain IS awesome! To be honest... not sure. I got a couple of 8ft by about 8 to 10in wide 4/4 rough sawn boards from a friend for free, long ago. A lot of warp and twist and lots of stress still in them! Decided I would waste too much jointing and planing the long boards so they have just been sitting. I never really noticed the grain until last weekend when I was re arranging my crowded shop and took a closer look.

Anyways, I think it is oak but I am actually not sure because I haven't seen grain like that before. The finish is just linseed oil and a little beeswax, so that is the natural wet look! I thought it was pretty cool.

The black walnut has sentimental value. Reclaimed from a solid wood circa 1960 modern design bookcase that my father built. I recently sold his old Craftsman Radial Arm Saw that hadn't been turned on in 15 years. That sentimental departure inspired me to start making gifts for family using the black walnut in his memory.

It looks like white oak to me.

Thanks BB... not functionally the best as edge grain would be more durable but gotta love that grain pattern. Maybe a little more show than go, but definitely usable. I'm not so much into dust collecting ornaments as I am dust producing ones. :D

For kitchen use durability doesn’t make much difference. It’s not like you’re chopping with an axe. I have wood boards that have been used for years with only mild scratches.

Yeah I know... but the perfectionist in me rears its ugly head often. I critique everything. Wife can attest.

Great day today... besides getting my propane heater finally working in my shop (its own thread) I also unloaded and placed my new 8in jointer in my shop. Time to read the manual then turn it on and make some chips.

Very nice indeed  I'm betting you will enjoy that immensely .

I finally ( really a few days ago) got the gear box for the swing on my bucket truck put together. This thing was about as junk as junk could be but I couldn’t find another one. The case was cracked, one of the caps was busted, the gear had teeth broke and all of the bearings and seals were bad. About $1000 later it’s fixed.
