Todays trucks where is the MPG's

The best mileage truck I've had was an '88 F-250 with the 7.3 diesel and 5 speed manual trans. It would get close to 20 mpg. Worst mileage was from a '79 F-350 with a 460, three speed auto and 4.10 axle that would get 10 highway and 8 pulling a load.

You know, the ting with buying a diesel with low miles on it is they are usually trashed. You can't come out on top of any deal with getting rid of a diesel with low miles. The motor itself is a 7k upgrade in most cases and it just doesn't pay. The majority of diesels out there, non fleet, has been tuned, abused, and more than likely has issues. Besides I don't buy used, and if you run fleet your not going to buy used. It's ridiculous to think it's cheaper to buy old and work on it than to buy new take care of it and trade it off with high miles. Putting 200k on a truck in 4 years is a lot of maintenance, and even more if you start with a high mile vehicle, or a low mile junk pile that was tuned and burnt up.

Point taken. I see what you mean, a 40K deisel not trashed will prolly be hard to find, unless youjust ran into a person in bad shape financially.

Diesels are the easiest thing out there to tune for maximum hp. Around here at night on the weekends you see groups of them in parking lots doing doughnut in a brand new lariat. I'm not saying all are burnt but enough of them that I don't take a chance. Very expensive to crack a diesel open. I tuned my truck for mpg and to loose the dpf, I can see where you could easily abuse these things.

Hey guys pulled up the mountain today but didn't use enough gas to justify refueling should be next trip but here is the load that I normally pull and the rig has been getting 9.2 to 10.4

Looks good. I have a '69 F-350 cab chassis w/ 11' flat bed. Just bought it last year and getting ready to work it over to put it in the 'fleet' for my business. As it sits with a 360, 4spd, and 3.73 gears I think it would probably get pretty good mileage (relatively speaking.) It will be strictly used for hauling and towing however so I'm going to re-gear down to 4.10 or 4.56. Probably won't effect the mileage too much under a heavy load, might actually make it better.

I'll add a data point. My 2001 F350, crew cab, 4x4 automatic, 5.4, gears are pretty tall, can't remember which set. Last few tanks I've hand calced mileage. The most recent tank I tried to be easy on it, little city driving, driving slow on the highway.
Drum roll:
33 us gallons to go 400 miles. 12 mpg. I think I'm going to start looking it over, I've replaced several coil on plugs, fixed the sticking brake calipers, air filter good. I've talked to other owners of similar trucks and they are getting 17-18 mpg without trying too hard.

EDIT reading on the net, this truck will get 11-14 mpg period. The 17 mpg must be a 2wd manual tranny.

slowzuki, thats average. I had 2 trucks. One was a 2000. F250, 4x4, 5.4L auto. 4.10s. Gets 10-12mpg. I used to have 2001 F250, 4x4, 5.4L 5 sp. 4.10s Both trucks were bought new and had basic interiors, Very comparable in every way, except the transmission. The 01 got 12-14mpg. You for sure save gas with a stick shift. Now, I lost that 01 when I got in a snow wreck. Replaced with a 06 F350, 4x4, new 5.4L ( +40hp, +15 ft lbs. ) 3.73s. That truck gets 12-15mpg. I might hit 16mpg on a long highway run, maybe. But it pulls a trailer much better than the 00 or the 01 did. I believe I could hit 18 easy, if it was a stick shift.
