Rest in Peace
My father had an "L" for a while, back when he was buying older tractors. It was a pain to get on, IIRC you had to climb up over the back of the seat to get on it. He was in his '70s and sold it for that reason.
His would have been a good parade tractor with a little cosmetic work.
As you know, clutches sometimes seize up on tractors, so I had to learn a new trick. We parked the tractor behind the barn with nothing in front of it. I learned that the clutch would not release and you could not get it into gear with the engine running. So I'd crank it (yep, had to hand crank) to get it started, and let it warm up a bit. Then shut it down, put it in first gear, crank it, and get out of the way as it took off, but of course slowly in first gear, and then climb on from behind, as you said, stand on the clutch pedal, rev up the engine and stand on the brakes to pop the clutch loose. It's a wonder a 10-12 year old kid didn't kill himself with that thing.
