Too late to do a concrete slab in the North?

A light frost wouldn't hurt anything. I'm talking about the ground being pretty well frozen. What i mean by a good sealer is that a lot of the concrete companys sell a sealer. You want the sealer/hardener. It really does a good job. I roll it on with a heavy nap roller rush and long handle. Just don't leave puddles. You can use a garden pump type sprayer if you want. It soaks into the top 1/4" of the concrete and really helps it harden and also seals the concrete from water soaking into it especially in the winter and then where it freezes and pops the surface. Also i would use wire mesh in it , but make sure you keep the wire lifted up into the middle of the concrete to be effective. I never liked the fiberglass in it because if it even hairline cracks then the fiberglass is useless. The #4000 is a good mixture.

High Early means it sets up faster. Or it did 40 years ago!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The additional chemical added has been evading my failing memory.

Things may have changed since then.

That's what I was thinking would be a good mix. Has anyone ever heard of anything called "a six bag mix" referring to concrete? I overheard a couple farmers talking yesterday and one said he'd used that and, while it cost a little more, he was glad he used it.

In the days before cement trucks, Portland cement would be transported in 94-pound bags. A six-bag mix means that there are 564 pounds of Portland cement per cubic yard of concrete.

OK, I figured it had to have something to what I might have called hand mixing the concrete. That brings another question, though. What, if any, is the correlation between a "six bag mix" and the rating of concrete by strength?

Is a "six bag mix" something like 4,000# test? Stronger? Weaker?

I might be wrong, but i'm thinking a 5 bag mix is equal to #4000.
4000 is plenty for what you want. I'm not big on additives. Maybe hot water if you have to, Just my opinion. The purer the concrete the better.

Here's the link where I got my information. The same site also indicates...

It is important to specify the exact quality of concrete you want used on your driveway. Steve Klochko, Gibraltar National, (800) 442-7258, recommends a 6-bag mix with a 3-inch slump. Properly cured, this concrete mix will develop a PSI OF 3,600 to 4,000 pounds.

Gary:

Times a wasting. Sooner poured the better. The concrete supplier will be able to tell you everything you need to know about the concrete you will require.

Additives are essential in some cases if you want the floor to last more than 20 years.

Egon, lighten up man. It's SUNDAY!

I got the deal put together late, late Friday afternoon and I'm meeting the contractor tomorrow morning, I swear. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

As to additives, these last two posts couldn't be more diverse in opinion. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I guess I'll just have to ask the supplier and contractor on that one, too. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
