rmcconnell said:Yeah, I think that it has to do with the float and seat. I'm no engine expert but all the black smoke leads me to think that it is getting too much fuel. Most problems that people seem to have are fuel restriction which would cause a stall. I seem to have lots of fuel and fuel smell.
There doesn't appear to be a float height set in the diagram.
I'd also say that I have good fuel flow because when I open the carborator drain screw it pours out of there for a while.
I had this same problem many years ago also. Took me a while to figure it out, and like you, I pressed the float one day and it clicked on me that a float full of fuel has very little compression to lift the needle into the seat. I am also thinking that your fuel tank is above your engine, and that gravity will let the fuel slip by the fuel pump, and fill up the carb and then over flow, causing the symptoms you had. Did you change the oil that was in the engine. If you have not found a new float yet, you can maybe fix the leak by using a hot soldering iron and reseal the leak. You can test your repair by putting the float under water, squeezing it and look for bubbles. Somewhere in the engine manual there will be a picture of the carb upside down, showing the distance from the float edge to the rim of the carb. This distance is necessary to allow enough pressure to fully seat the needle when the bowl is full, and prevent flooding.
