too much hydro fluid

Hi,

Over the weekend I topped off my hydro fluid, but inadvertently added too much oil. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif The oil level is about .5 cm above the upper marker on the dip stick. It doesn't seem like there is an easy way to remove the excess; will this cause damage to the system if I do not drain off the excess?

No damage from too much oil (within reason).

At one time Kubota tractors (the L-xx50's) had a cavitation problem at the pump pickup - their solution was in part to make new shorter dipsticks so the recommended oil level was an inch higher !! That's pretty convincing evidence that it's ok to have more in there !

That's easy to do if you don't lower all the implements prior to checking. I doubt that it would cause a problem though because there is a lot of empty space in the reservoir to allow for the empty/refill cycle of the various hydraulic cylinders. I think I heard the mechanic say something about 2-3 gallons of reserve space.

Letting it get too low is a different story.

I'll bet it's only overfilled by a few ounces. Those little B's hydro fluid kinda sneaks up on ya.

Relatively speaking, the .5 cm over the high mark is quite a bit considering the distance between the high and low marks on the dip stick are about .75 cm apart. I remember reading some time ago that over filling the crank case with engine oil could lead to blown seals ( I am pretty much a mechanical novice, so excuse my ignorance if this is totally off ). This is why I was concerned about overfilling the hydro resevoir.

It's a bit different in the hydro system. If you really overfilled it, it would bubble out the breather (little curved do-hickus on top of the 3PH).
