He is talking about having the High/Low Range selector in neutral as apposed to having it in Low.

What he said was "I found that by leaving the tractor in low gear (I have a HST) that this also helped the tractor from moving backwards when using the backhoe." I didn't think that means having it in neutral. I think he was trying to have a slight forward pressure on the drivetrain and that is what I replied to as being dicey. If he meant just having the range selector in low but leaving the HST pedal in the normal neutral (i.e. stopped) position, then that would actually be normal operating procedure.

Yes, I mean leaving the range selector in low position and the HST pedal in neutral. In the past, I always shifted the range selector into neutral whenever I got off the tractor. To be clear, the HST pedal is in it's neutral position!

I think the common (and "correct") stopping procedure with HST is to
leave the tractor in L or H range and set the parking brake, then get off.
The HST is self-braking and provides an additional roll-away safety
mechanism. Would you park your Buick by putting the trans in neutral?
Or Park?

HST provides another productivity gain (over gear) with backhoe use:
You can move your tractor fwd or back slightly from the b/h seat by
reaching around, lifting the loader and using a rod or stick to operate the
F or R go pedal. This especially useful in trenching, as the commercial
operators will tell you.

For trenching with my gear drive tractor I use the backhoe to shove the tractor ahead and seldom leave the backhoe seat. No productivity gain there with a hydro..

Before I filled the rear tires on my tractor I was a little anxious to see what my BH was capable of, I found out It was lots more powerful than my previous one and drug the tractor around alot.
Filling the rear tires was the only change I did to keep the hoe from pulling me around.

The gains would be in the self-braking aspect of an engaged HST, with
the ability of moving back and forth from the b/h seat. A gear tractor
has to be left in neutral before you can operate the hoe, so yes you
can move the tractor with the hoe. But the original subject of this
thread was that the tractor is too easily pulled around by the hoe. An
engaged HST is going to be harder to drag around vs a gear tractor in
neutral.
