WOO HOOOOO!! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

How about some nice pictures of your baby with the lake in the background and a sunrise or sunset going on. How does your baby do in the sand, by the way? I don't think I'll ever have the opportunity to try mine in that situation.

Wal,

Don't have a digital camera but will take a pic and scan it in soon. As far as the sand goes...I am glad I got the R-4's. Even with four wheel, when that box blade is full of sand. forward progress is at a premium.

Here's a rookie four wheel drive observation. I thought when you have four wheel drive "all" four wheels are supposed to drive. Makes sense. But I am sure I saw one front wheel spinning the other not when it was bogged down in the sand. Any comments?

Also, the Kubota dealer mechanic told me he does a lot of front axle seal replacements. Claims that the design of the housing allows sand, grit etc. to lay on the "shelf" all the way around the seal and it eventually makes it's way into the seal. Those R-4's throw a lot of sand onto that shelf in the course of a day. He suggested fabricating a guard to deflect all that grit. This may not be a problem for you people with clay but we operate daily in what is called "sugar sand". Just like the name implies. Anyone have any thoughts on this.

Mike,

You are correct in noting that not all 4 were spinning. You have 2 differentials, one under each axle, so you are pretty much always going to have 1 front and 1 rear spinning if there is not sufficient traction. That is what the differential lock for the rear end does for you, look behind your right heel for a little lever (might be on the left on a B7500). But that only locks the rear differential. The front axle does not lock out and thus 1 front wheel will pretty much always be spinning in poor traction.

As for the grit shield, I think you pretty much nailed it. Having lived in Daytona for 5 yrs, I can just imagine what that sand would do to the seal at that shelf (L3010's have the same shelf). I don't think clay will have much effect, but that constant grinding from sand would be hell on that seal.

Many times when I have been stuck in mud I wished I had front differential lock. I think I could have pulled myself out of some situations with it. I wonder how big a tractor you have to have before the manufacturers include that feature.

Congrats & enjoy! Planting a garden huh - I wish I could. It's mid-winter mud season here - just enough to get your hopes up but ya, know its gonna snow again.

As pointed out, there are two differentials; one front and one rear. The rear differential has a lock that you can press with the heal of your left foot. My usual routine is to (1) engage FWD when the going gets tough, and (2) stomp on the rear differential lock if one of the rears starts to spin. This way, you get 3 out of 4 working, and that's the best you can do with this baby.

BTW - the diff lock should only be used when you're going in a straight line (no corners!).
