The other "tip" on locked rear differentials is to also listen for the "Clunk" of the disengagement before turning. If the axle stays under load it won't unlock freely.
Moving around a corner with a locked axle is a "bad" thing. If the wheels can slip (like on sand or loose dirt), it doesn't cause much harm. But on solid ground a LOT of forces can be generated inside the differential and whole rear housing.
