I told my wife that if I ever bought a new mower I would get some type of ZTR machine. Well I took the plunge and bought a JD SST18 Spin Steer mower today. I cut about 1.5 to 2.0 acres weekly and this seemed to fit the bill. It is 18hp with a 48" deck. I like it because it drives like a regular mower but is ZTR when you need it. I am trying to break some of the old habits developed on regular mowers. Having a steering wheel instead of the dual sticks makes you forget you are on a ZTR. I cut my entire yard today in an hour and a half. It usually took me anywhere from 2.5 to 3 hours before.

Didn't you just buy a dozer? You are accumulating too many toys aren't you? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Guilty as charged! The mower was a necessity, but a really fun necessity. My National Guard check each month will be paying for the Deere. I guess I will stay in a little longer!

You got TOO MANY TOYS either that, or too much money. Send me some, I could use it.

My hard work is returning dividens now. I have been buying, selling, and trading grey market tractors for 5-6 years now as something of a hobby business. The return on that was the dozer and a small tractor with a loader. The Spin Steer is coming out of my National Guard check. I have heard the "Too Many Toys" comment from people that golf every weekend or have a $20,000 bass boat. This is what I do, play in the dirt. I just take it in stride and before somebody thinks I am getting defensive, I am just trying to show you that anybody can have what they want, if you get creative enough. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Brent, how does it turn, like a true ZTR?

I never test drove one. But it would seem that the tires wouldn't bite as well with the motor up front like that.

I see theres a steering assist kit for it, it basically adds weights to the back end.

Let us know what you think about it, any pros or cons, especially around trees, or sharp 180 turns, slope turns, reversing... etc...

Thanks,
John
