I am wondering if a jobox style tool box could have cat1 pins welded on and made to be a ballast box which could double as a tool box? Anyone see any problems that stand out?

I see no issues I'm sure you could make it work.

yeah I see problems with it as a ballast box. you would need to reinforce the whole thing. just welding pins to the side is going to make the sides buckle if you put a good amount of ballast in it. the pin area will be stressed a lot. Job box tool boxes were not meant to be suspended in the air with 500-1000 pounds by 2 pins welded to the side. The pins will probably just bend up wards taking the sides with it.

I agree with big mike. I should have said it before but I thought it went without saying that you would have to reinforce it and do some fab to hook up the toplink.

I would suggest a heavy angle iron frame and platform for the box to set on, that way if you have tools in it and do not want to load with ballast, one could set two 30 or 55 gallon drums on the platform for ballast, and if it is platform one could use it for a mini pickup or carry all,

some thing like a three point bale mover, ( the kind with the forks) with a bolt/pin on platform

I thank you all for the ideas. I was originally thinking if it was strong enough to hold all the tools it would be strong enough for ballast. I didn't think about the pins putting all the stress in one location. I am going to rethink how I could do this
