Tool set for tractors

I bought a full set of metric 6 point impact sockets at Dorsey Rubber & Equipment Co. here in Charlottesville (1-800-368-200) for $70. Bought these in 1/2" drive to fit my new TSC Farmhand air impact wrench, good for up to 550 ft-lb, bought at $80. My Clark champ air compressor bought at TSC and good for 5.0 SCFM drives the impact wrench and is a great compressor. It's oil type with a quality drain valve that doesn't leak. It sits there holding full pressure until the next time I turn it on to use it. The champ was somewhere around $150. You can carry it around by hand.

You are right Eddie, everyone has a life-time warranty. What people have to look for is how you get that warranty. Do you have to mail the item in (can get expensive if you have to mail a tool in every time one breaks) or can you just take it to the store you bought it in and get a replacement. Then you have to wonder if the store you bought it will still carry that brand. This is why I try to buy from a company that I figure will be around for a long time and a store that should be around a long time.

Starting out on tools??

Get several good quality adjustable spanners, pliers, vice grip, hammer and a few necessary screwdrivers. Oh - and a filter wrench and an oil drain bucket and something to keep the old filters in.

After a year or two you'll know exactlly what you need. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

In the meantime you get to do a lot of shopping and never know when the really good bargains come along.

I'd hit the chineese tool stores. Good cheap tools.. and they are inexpensive too! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Seriously though.. I picked up a set of 1+" sockets.. went from 1" to 2.25" and was 1/2 drive. Had a HD ratched and 2' breaker bar.. cost about 40 bucks, and had some drive adapters with it. I also picked up a sae/metric wrench set.. about 20$.. that and a couple mallets/mauls, a few chissles .. etc.. and you can get a decent amount of needed tractor tools for about 100$.

So far i have not broken one of my chineese sockets or wrenches.

had them about 4 years now.. and have done quite abit of work with them.. minor rebuilds.. and assembly of my 10' mower.. etc.

Do yourself a favor and get a little plumbers handheld propane or MAPP torch.. you WILL need it at some point.

Thanks for all the links and ideas - I've hit a couple of the web sites so far and it sure looks like I can find everything I need (or is it want?) without a problem. I'll stick with the 1/2 inch drive. I have a fairly extensive tool set today, just in the smaller sizes and 1/4 & 3/8 drive - typical homeowner/small engine sizes. I'm going to hold off on the compressor and impact tools until my barn is done this summer.

So far, (Knock on wood), the only thing I have needed and carry on the tractor as well, is a 10 inch crescent wrench, a 3-pound drilling hammer and a goodie bag full of extra lynch pins and a top link pin. Don't forget your snack cakes and a bottle of water.
Which by the way, I rigged up something pretty neat and not to bulky for carrying the water.
I took an aluminum water bottle cage off my "college days" mountain bike. Bolted it to the fender right beside the seat. Does not get in the way and holds not only the bottle that came with it, but holds a 20 ounce bottle of Coca-Cola perfectly.

Good idea on the water bottle idea.

I'm still searching for a suitable water holder for my 7610s. So far I've been bunji strapping a small drinkink cooler to the canopy/rops bracket. Not a perfect soloution.. but beats being thirsty.

The extra lynch pins are a must. it's to the point when i mow that I use a small piece of wire to wire my lynch pins shut.

I'm thinting about zip-tieing a small lanyard chain to various points and then attatching the chain to the lynch pins.

My old ford 2N is setup this way with captive lynch pins and holders for them built into the lower lift arms.

Nothing like looking back and seeing a pin missing...

I've seen lynch pins with a small length of chain (approx. 8") already attached for sale at TSC.

I'd add a good multi tip screw driver to your list of items to include on your tractor. I was mowing a trail that I've been maintaining for two years now. It's in pretty good shape, but an old branch managed to twist up and catch my fuel line and pull it off.

The clamp had a very tiny head for a screw driver to fit into that I've never seen before. My regular screw driver wouldn't fit it, and that's all I had with me.

I couldn't get it tight enough to stop the fuel from leaking out with what I had. Now I have the orange handled multi tip one from Home Depot that works good.

I typically don't find I have pins missing until I lift up my finish mower, back up to mow something tall, slowly set my finish mower down and then mow 2 or 3 of my wheels.

I then spend the next hour trying to find my spacers.

Oh wait a minute. I should have made this third person and posted it in that old thread about stupid things we (others) have done. I just incriminated myself. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
