Tooth Bar or Cutting Bar

I just can’t see that bucket spade NOT bending the FEL bucket.
That is why a bucket spade never appealed to me.

I have one on order, should be here Wednesday. I got it to do some shoveling in soil. Not rock. The full bucket would easily take a bite of this stuff, I just don't want a six foot wide hole. I figure it'll be fine and if not a 72" SSQA bucket isn't exactly rare or expensive.

as far as the bolt on front mounted spade as one member suggested, it wouldn't last 10 minutes on a larger tractor maybe on a sub compact.

Bucket Spades, like other attachments, come in various builds. Some are pressed steel. In contrast, the Bucket Spade produced by Bucket Solutions is 100 pounds of forged steel. I have been punishing mine for eight years, mostly in tree work and Palmetto removal in Florida sandy loam but occasionally in Lime Rock. A Kubota 'B' is the minimum weight tractor that can insert it and you need moist soil for rapid excavation with a light tractor. On a 'B' one has to be careful not to distort the thin Loader bucket with exuberance.

My L3560 weighs 3,700 pounds bare tractor and has the optional L2296 heavy-duty, round-back bucket. I have unreservedly recommended Bucket Spade for use on tractors with 5,000 pounds bare tractor weight and a Loader, such as the Kubota M5660/M6060/M7060. Tractor weight is much more important factor inserting the Bucket Spade into challenging ground than is Loader hydraulic power.

Your M8540 might be too much.

LA805 FEL weighs 1,279 pounds.

Some of the LA805 weight bears on the BS/BS, say 400 pounds.

LA2296 SSQA H-D, R-B bucket weighs 180 pounds.

Bucket Solutions' Bucket Spade weighs 110 pounds.

So FEL + L2296 + BS/BS total weight = 690 pounds bearing on the sharp 18" edge of the bucket spade.

Once the bucket spade is positioned in the ground, you insert it to depth by moving tractor forward.

Like what I always said about any tractor or equipment, what ever suits you. That's all that really matters.

For me, a bucket spade wouldn't work out so well due to too much hardpan and red shale in our soil. Why take the chance of bowing the bottom of a perfectly good FEL bucket? And my soil composition is why I prefer a regular toothbar rather than a Piranha bar.

Now I use my backhoe for digging any size hole I want.

Had I a $7,000 Backhoe I would not own a $439 Bucket Spade.

The $7,000 Backhoe is unquestionably better for some applications, especially trenching. The max depth I can reach with the Bucket Spade on the bucket is 54". Bucket Spade is designed to accept Pallet Forks to dig deeper, but I have never had the need.

I agree completely. A bucket spade is a hunk of junk compared to a back hoe. But my back & a shovel is a crap compared to a $200 bucket spade.

I have the Paulmco one from Northern Tool. It's the pallet forks one rather than an actual bucket mount one. I have yet to break or bend it with the old L3200 or the new L4060hstc. Have worn off a good chunk of the paint though. ;-)

No clue how well my Piranah bar works on the L4060 as I got the new machine with it & dont feel the slightest need to ever take it off. It back drags just fine with it on. It digs ok, but no loader is going do dig well, especially in the clay around here. Need the spendy hoe for any good digging.

First off I have NO practical experience in this but am I'm am trying to decide toothbar vs piranha bar. First I was toothbar fan and I'm sure it would have improved my plain cutting bar on my 84" bucket. However those with experience with both have convinced me that while teeth work on actually digging equipment like backhoes, front end loaders and skid steers our FEL are NOT real digging machines. Think of a square nose shovel compared to a spade. So I've come to the conclusion that saw pattern on the piranha bar let's me apply more cutting force than toothbar will. For my application removing topsoil vegetation and for breaking up packed clay and removal of flint rock the piranha bar by expand is my choice. Thanks to all those who explained why I was wrong, that's why I visit here! What convinced me was remembering how much better a spade shovel worked once the blade is sharpened. I had to think back to how my dad always keep our shovels sharp. Brains better than muscle

The Piranha bar is more substantial than most tooth bars too, so it strengthens the lip of the bucket. I originally planned to get a bolt on cutting edge to stiffen the bucket, but they cost nearly as much as a PB.

M7060 came with 72" bucket that was rather light duty on the front cutting edge, before I brought it home I switched to the 84" mainly due to my tires were wider than the bucket, I got the radials. The 84" has a very heavy duty cutting edge, which I will asked expand about.
