JD 4020
I know there has been countless threads on this both about buying and building, so I am going 1 more thread to the list.
I have a 4020 JD with a 7 foot bucket and I keep breaking it trying to dig, so I am the point where I believe a tooth bar would help me out. Looking for one the is 83 3/4 long is challenging also. But when comparing the prebuilt ones how can you make sure you are comparing apples to apples? how can you make sure that it is heavy enough? My local stores can get a tooth bar but have no clue how heavy they are. they sell shanks and tooths and pins at about 40 or so for all of them. Of course you see some online for 19.99 for all of it. So my question is what tooth shank to use or how to tell if it will be heavy enough? Keep in mind that I can lift 5000 lbs with my loader(koyker 565). I don't want to break the bank buying a tooth bar. Now I can weld and building one if I can save out of pocket money would be preferred as like most people, I have more time than money.

So i guess I am asking for a supplier or brand of decent quality and price for tooth shanks, teeth and pins.

Thank you in advance

When buying components you have no clue as to quality of steel used. Most components will source from the far East.

I would buy a Long Tooth Bar. You can rely on Long for quality components and quality design.

Long will build any length requested.

Long is in North Carolina.

PRICING: W.R. Long Industrial Tooth bar for Tractors and Skid Steers | Add a tooth bar to your tractor or skid steer bucket with a bolt on tooth bar

It would be helpful to all your posts if you add your LOCATION to your TBN PROFILE.

While I do not have a doubt that those tooth bars are worth every penny, it is quite a bit more than my pocket book will allow. If any one has one and can tell me what shanks are on them?

What do you keep breaking? What are you trying to accomplish?

right now I am trying to break a pond open. I keep breaking the edge of the bucket, a few years ago my dad was trying to pop out a rock and well the rock won and I had a big crack(about 8 inches) from the cutting edge in. Now since my cutting edge is not replaceable I was thinking that putting a bolt on tooth bar would help strengthen the actual edge and allow me to dig a little bit better. I have used my bucket to clear land, dig trenches for water line.

Tractors are made for pulling & loaders are made for loading not digging. I'd use a box blade for your digging needs then move spoils with loader. The box blade has scarfiers that do similar work to a tooth bar. Much better geometry on the 3pt than the loader to avoid breaking things.

its hard the get a box blade 8 feet in the air to open a pond up. It is also alot of work to dig a trench 4 foot deep with a box blade. the best equipment wold be a back hoe but I do not have one

Wish I had some help in your search. But I do not. I don't think I've ever saw a "toothed" bucket that particular loader or tractor. I'd definitely want some experienced advice before buying a kit.

Is your bucket quick attach?? If so, what type??

Maybe start searching for a "toothed" bucket?? I searched Craigslist and found a Bobcat Lo-Pro bucket used with teeth for $600. It's tough as a boot and I've since added/built a Grapple for it. My FEL uses SSQA so finding attachments is easy.

I think I'd get with a local welding shop about replacing your bucket edge and get it good and straight before getting a toothbar or removable wear edge. The new lip they may install on your bucket might use plow bolts to hold a replaceable wear edge on. I'm not set up to haul my tractor so I dropped by a local dealer and they had a number of older pin on buckets sitting out back. Measured one that was "close enough" and I took it home in the bed of my truck. A little time with my angle grinder and cut off wheels cleared enough of the mount to let me rotate the bucket enough to work so I got a new bucket instead of just a new edge. Getting pins to fit and shiming in the mounts on the new bucket to the old rams made assembly a pain but its done and I'm happy.

I don't need to dig as much as I'd like to protect the edge and be able to drag up small trees and undergrowth. Still on the fence and I don't know anyone that has one that I can observe in use in person.

Yeah, that's why I asked about his QA. I have a smooth bucket and a toothed bucket. With SSQA it's easy to swap and I do a lot.
