Talked to Carver this morning and they didn't think it would be possible. This is a problem because there is no power on the land. I suppose I could drive it to the closest house and plug a drill in, but what do you think? Can an 18 volt 1/2" drill cut the mustard drilling the holes? (Assuming enough batteries on hand or time between charges)

GarageSmoker,

I've been doing some drilling in steel lately with my cordless and although it is a time consuming activity - it can be done. Better get an extra charger.

Have at least 3 or 4 batteries charged and ready.

What about renting a portable generator?

I wouldn't try it but I GUESS it could be done. Biggest problem with drilling a hole that big with a small drill is if the bit bites it'll wrench the drill out of your hand pretty easily. I used a hole hawg cause it gives you enough leverage so that won't happen. If using a small hand drill you have to be pretty careful or you can twist your wrist pretty badly.

I drilled the holes in my HD bucket for my toothbar using a Craftsman 16.8V cordless drill and a bimetal hole saw. I was about half way through the second hole when I had to change the first battery out. I don't think you'll have any problems.

I drill 1/4" angle iron with my Dewalt 18 volt all the time. I don't think that it would be any problem to drill a bucket lip with it.

Why rent a generator - now you have justification to buy one./w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

Good point on justifying the generator. I can probably get the power company to put my construction power pole in also. I just thought of that. I might as well give the cordless a try though. Sounds like others are being successful.

It will cut the mustard. Just take some time thats all. But the good thing is on low you won't burn your bit up either. I think you will be surprised at how well it will do. Just be careful not to overheat the drill. Also keep some oil on the bit and you will be using your toothbar in no time.
