jshbryan, I got a dozer to deep (4') root plow 10 acres of mesquite. (The other 30 acres of mesquite I leave for the bees, deer and cows.) Now, once a year I pop out the little ones with my backhoe. I have been able to keep the 10 acres pretty clean. I have a tooth bar on the FEL but I would not consider this the right tool because it digs too big of a hole with those deep roots. I'm organic so spraying is out.
I'm lucky with the prickly pear cactus. The wife likes the flowers, I like the pears, and the cows like the pads. (And no I don't need more)
