Top and tilt

Curious... AS far as top and tilts go. Is it necessary to have hydraulic rams for this system? I can realize the use of the tilt component but I question the purpose of the top portion. With both rams at least in my case, I would require adding an expensive diverter and a forth valve or I would have to unplug my FEL to operate both functions. With just the tilting ram I could use the single rear remote for that. As I have not used such a nifty gadget in the past, I thought some of the Guru's here could privide me with some advice, as if both are necessary. Thanks!

As to your question, you can certainly do either without the other. If I were going to go with either the hydraulic top link alone or the side tilt by itself, I know I'd choose the top link. I know in my applications it would get far more use than the side link would.

You mention a single rear connection. Is it possible that's the Deere 'power beyond' connection behind your seat with a hydraulic supply and return line? If it is and you want both the top link and side tilt to be hydraulic you won't need a diverter. A two spool valve and controller will operate both cylinders while not interfering with your FEL operation at all. If you're not sure, check with your dealer.

One last comment here. If you want a system you can buy in parts and later expand without discarding some of what you initially acquire, take a look at the Terrain Contour Control system by Integrated Engineering. You can get just one cylinder and controller now and, if you later want the other cylinder, simply add it and operate it with the same controller. It takes a lot of anxiety out of deciding what to buy now as there's virtually no downside to going with one now and upgrading later.

I have both and use both frequently, particularly when using ground engaging tools like a box blade or rake. Tilt's use is rather obvious in contouring land, but Top is useful in setting the angle of attack. I also use Top when mowing over the top of a hill. With a fixed top link, as the tractor goes over the top, the rear of the mower lifts up and doesn't cut the grass. With the adjustable Top you can compensate for this. Both are handy when connecting tools to the tractor on uneven ground. Hope this helps.
