Re: Belly mower

Thank you. Using your scan, I have highlighted the area of concern.

I have been thinking of the enlarged plate idea, that pennwalk has suggested. I think that has the most promise.

do you guys see any problem with attaching on the sides of the pto as well as the area on top of the tranny forward of the area which has broken?

here is the drawing, showing the broken area. The red areas have completely broken out.

Re: Belly mower

heres a couple of long shots:
*weld nuts of the same size over the broken holes and thread through the nuts.
*use some steel epoxy to mount some all thread or some headless bolts into the holes.
Get a tiller bracket that has the one set of holes on one side and 3 sets of holes on the other, and weld that, or mount in some creative way, then attach the top link to that piece.

Just thinking out loud

Re: Belly mower

Mike, I just realized that yours is a 186, and that part is the whole transmission housing.. I'm editing my previous message because clearly you can't just "take the part off and fix it.

Just looked at my 165D, and on that tractor the top link is not mounted to the top of the transmission, but rather is a separate plate that is mounted as a partner on top of to the vertical plate that covers the back of the transmission. What about doing it that way? By not trying to fix the existing mount at all, but making a complete upper 3pt mount assembly that connects to stronger points on the tractor? Does someone have the ability to scan in a picture of the attachment part used on the YM187 or YM165?

Re: Belly mower

Jeff, I was wondering what that was all about. You were actually saying "housing a__'y" and it bleeped you. Well, I guess I'll grab my hat and my donkey and be out of here.

Re: Belly mower

Mike, I agree welding on a casting is probably your last resort. I looked at my tractor a 2310 and my upper link is bolted to rear housing just below the upper lift arms. In the pics you posted, I see three bolts holding some sort of plate below your arms. I would suggest to rebolt the top link in the proper position and see if it would be possibile to fabricate an adaptor plate between the link and those three bolts. This would replace the two broken rear mounting holes. The adapter plate could be welded to the top link. The last broken mounting hole could possibily be used if you add a bracket from that hole to another bolt, and the other side could be reinforced by a mirror image bracket. If you do attempt to add plates, use bolts longer by the thickness of the adaptor plate. It would be a shame if you got it fixed only to strip out threads because the bolts weren't long enough.

Re: Belly mower

I think that Clifst has the right idea. Take it to a welding shop/metal fabricator and have a new top link mount made that incorporates those bolts that I see in a vertical line on the rear of the transmission. We are looking for an irregular faceplate to fit over the existing plate. It will require longer bolts of course, and some spacers too I'll bet. You can't make it too strong, mine is half inch steel plate. Maybe even bring it on over the top of the existing mount so it also also attaches to some forward bolts. Expect to spend a few hundred dollars, but this is child's play for any welding/fabrication shop. And you will have a better 3pt for it. I see no way to repair the existing holes and studs.

Re: Belly mower

OK that's the plan. The good news is that a master welder has a deer lease on my property in return for slave labor.
This is play for him...

Thanks for all the advice... I was beginning to think this would be the end for my 186. But I think it will be better when done. And I sure have learned a lot that will certainly help me with this and future tractors. They sure are strong, but the forces an implement can exert during work is amazing. Now I know why 3PH backhoes are such a problem. At least this isn't a shiny new $25K rig with a now voided warranty...
