just checked my JD 4300 rockshaft filter and there was a hole blown thru it (55 hrs). Looks like someone drove a scrrewdriver through the screen. I called my local JD dealer and they had never heard of this rockshaft filter and they could not find it on the computer. The Service Manager had no idea what I was talking about. I called John Deere's toll free number and talked to someone who gave me a part number after about 1/2 hour of looking. He said it was LVA12302. Could someone verify this. He also said the new 10 series tractors have been re-designed with a new filter assembly. I ordered this new filter and it is about twice as long and will not work--maybe I need some more pipes and or fittings. I have attached a picture of the torn screen. Does anyone know of retrofits for the 4300 tractor?

Thanks,

The screen you are looking at is normal; most have a small hole as shown in your picture. Problems arise when debris accumulates on the screen and impedes oil flowl, when this happens pressure will blow the screen into the position control valve. At this point, the control valve must be replaced, you can attempt to clean it, but in most cases replacement is called for.
You might talk to your dealer and describe the situation outlined in the new service manual (on line version if you do not already have the revision). He may, may not agree to provide you with the updated filter/tube assembly. If not, you can order the parts if so desired, you will need the following part #:

LVA11765 Oil Line (Left Side line) $15.93

LVA11289 Filter (This is the complete filter assembly, you will not need any additional parts) $27.34
Note: May also be under part # LVA12302 (Check with you dealer)

LVA11210 Oil Line (Right Side line) $21.00

T77932 O Rings (Pkg) $4.80

To install, follow instruction in owner’s manual. Be sure to replace O-rings. Remove fitting from position control valve, you may elect to replace the fitting with part #LVA11299, same fitting as installed without filter screen, however this is not necessary, just take a small drift punch and drive the screen out. This is not difficult. Re-assemble and check for leaks.

Hope this has been of some help.

Thanks for this great info with part numbers. I would assume this newly designed remote mounted is better than the inlet filter. I have heard of the inlet screen being blown into the rockshaft with the old filter. Is this possible with the new filter? You say the new filter is LVA11289. What parts does the LVA11289 include, if any , over the LVA12302? You also say to follow the owner's manual for installation. My manual does not show this new filter and the on-line manual shows my filter in the inlet to the rockshaft. Where can I get instructions for this new remote mounted filter?

Any opinions on the old vs new remote mounted cannister filter?

Thanks for all the help.

Checked the part number again, the ones in stock reflect the latter part number, i.e., LVA12302. The long line, attaches to the right hand side and routes around to the rear of the tractor, terminating under the top 3-point hitch link bracket, between the top link housing and PTO shield, then the new filter assembly, and the left hand line, the shorter of the two. Both lines are attached to existing fittings as described in my original post.
The new filter assembly is approximately four inches long, 1 ¼ inch in diameter, both ends have male fittings with O rings, the outlet end (marked out on fitting)(outlet end will face to the left side of the tractor when installed) is a dual male fitting with a hex head machined into the fitting allowing the housing to be dissembled for filter element change. If you ever have one apart there are two springs and a filter inside, the filter is like a step down cone, the large spring fits over the step down and is inserted first, followed by the filter, and the smaller diameter spring. However, when you purchase the filter, it comes assembled ready for installation.
As you will have to talk with you dealer to obtain the parts, have them look in the 4000ten series parts catalog, 4310 Compact Utility Tractor, Section 70, Page 39, under the name “Hydraulic Lines (Rockshaft)”, they will see a parts breakdown “MP27279. “ They should be able to print this out for you. It will show what I’m trying to describe. It’s really not difficult, did one Saturday. Also if you dealer still has any of the late production 4200, 4300, or 4400 tractors or the Ten Series of these, you can look at the rear and see the new filter and how it is installed.
As for opinion on new vs. old, maybe it’s just me, but everything seems to work better. Even more important is the peace of mine knowing the new one will not fail and cause downtime.

Sorry, miss read the last portions of your post, thought you were asking about the new inline filter vs. the old screen.
As for an opinion on the old vs. new remote mounted canister filter, can’t really say at this time. Don’t know of any problems with the old style with the exception of changing the Hydro filter to a larger canister to gain more volume.

Is this problem unique to hydro. models? Just picked up a leftover 2000 4300 syncrev. and wonder if this is also a concern with gear transmissions. Also when you switch over to the new filter design what is the filter replacement frequency?

Where is this filter located on the tractor?

   / Torn Rockshaft Filter 4300 #8
The filter is basically a screen located in a brass fitting under the seat. Check out the information found in the online manual link below. It filters the hydraulic fluid prior to going into control valve. Problems arise if hydraulic fluid pressure causes screen to dislodge. In later model 4300's and 4310's the filter is a canister type located just above PTO guard.

Is this problem unique to hydro. models? NO!! The problem deals with the hydraulic system (screen specifically)and has no relationship to transmission choice.
As I have stated in a reply to this question back in April, once you see the replacement parts, it will become clear as to replacement loction. Addressing the filter change issue, will have to check the book on that one.

Unregistered,

Have no problem with understanding the location of the new layout. My dealer got me the new oil lines and fitting allready but didn't provide the new filter canister/o-rings yet. I understand that the screen was used in all transmission types but reasoned that the hydro. units may have more particulate matter thus having more of a tendancy of blowing out the screen. Searched all posters with this problem and found all had hydro. units. Are you aware of any syncrev. transmissions that had the screen dislodge? My unit is this type with 21 hours. Waiting for filter and not sure I should use until I do this upgrade.

Thanks,
Al

I have the new filter on my 4310 Hydro from the factory located just behind the seat and I had this problem. Found a piece of the sintered bronze filter(must have changed from screen to this) in the three pt hitch valve keeping the rockshaft from working on a very cold day. Thick cold oil being forced through a restrictive filter. The reason for the failure is the filter can be put in backwards. One way of installation the oil flow has an effective 1/4" circular filter surface (high pressure on small square inches leads to blow outs) --the other way you have an approximate square inch of filter surface. Mine was put in backwards when they disassembled this line to install some of my optional hydraulics and backhoe braces. I fished out the broken out piece of sintered bronze from the valve and installed a new filter correctly and no further problems. I suppose it could be assembled backwards at the factory too---poor design as there should be different sizes of fittings on each side to make it idiot proof!!!!

First and foremost, thank you all for this thread. I bought a used 4300 and had a full service done and the dealership wanted to argue that it couldn't be a filter. I was able to give them the part number because of this thread and I have a scheduled pick up, but it's 150.00 trip charge each way.

I do not have access to a manual. I got the seat and seat assembly out to look for the in line filter and I'm not seeing it anywhere. Anyone able to help point out where I need to be looking? I climbed under and looked by the fender and saw nothing. I looked all around the lever and don't see anything. I feel like this should just jump out at me as being very obvious and able to see. What am I missing?

Welcome to TBN
Post pics of the area under the seat with the seat assembly out. Maybe then we can point out the filter.. either the problem one or if it has had the updated one added.

Don't understand why you would have an argument with the dealer?? What was your problem that they said "couldn't be the filter" ?

"Argue" wasn't the appropriate word. I'm frustrated with them because I paid the additional tune up fee to go over the PTO and 3 point hitch and make sure they were good to go. They had the tractor for a month before returning it. When I called to explain the issue he stated there is no filter that they didn't change. I gave him the part number and he acknowledged he had no idea it was in there, similar to the original poster in this thread. He said they'd have to do some research and then come pick it up later this week. It's 150.00 each way trip charge plus the super cheap labor charge it's going to cost me (I think it's 179 an hour or something). I know I can test this in 15 minutes by removing the screen inside if I can just find the filter.

Is it embedded rather than sticking out obviously with 2 lines on each side? Is that why I'm missing it?

Good pics.
And I see your cross-over pipe but do not see a filter in that pipe (tubing) where mine was located. So maybe fixed with this trouble-some filter removed. ??

Here is a link to a previous post that shows a filter in a different version of that cross-over pipe that drops down

I will look for pics of the replacement (and longer) filter that was installed on my 4300. But mine does not cross over that low (just looked).

From your pic, I've put white lines on the cross-over pipe and a white X where my original filter (screen) was located. Now I believe it is in the end of that pipe on the left side (but not certain of that). Been 22 years since changing that pipe.

On a side note, noticed the lynch pins on your 3 ph arms. I lost one of those while working in brush and nearly had a broken casting as a result when brush hogging.
Because so seldom ever needing the arms removed, I replaced those lynch pins with bolts and lock nuts. Something to consider.
Rendition of your pic.

and please get rid of that way too long top link pin before it vibrates over and one of the lift arms catches it and breaks something that you really don't want to buy!

Thank you both for the advice on the pins. It's blatantly obvious I have no idea what I'm doing and I sincerely appreciate the feedback fellas.
