Thanks to some briars, I have torn the boots on both of the steering ball joints (U joints in the tie rod linkage). /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I looked in the parts book, and was surprised that the boot is not shown seperately. Anyone know if these boots are available somewhere, or do I really have to replace the entire ball joint at $37 each?

Guess I need to devise a guard to protect these little guys.

Edit - sorry, forgot to say this is for a BX1500

Thanks,

TommyT,

I don't know for sure but I think you might have to buy the joint to get the boot. I am going to stop by my dealer on Monday and find out. I will be clearing some briars in the near future so I am curious as to wether the boots are available seperately.

Take care,

Jeff

P.S. I'll let you know what my dealer says.

I'm holding a new rubber boot in my hand which I bought to replace the torn one on my L4400. This was my, "Welcome to your new tractor" at 2.3 hours, after trying out the tractor in the woods.
Not sure if it's the same part but it came right off the dealer's shelf so if another part no. is needed they probably have it.
The plastic bag says #35080-44680 called "cover, dust". It was priced at about $10. or so.
Till I get to replace it, I wrapped the old one with some duct tape.

Electrical tape or duct tape may work. Also consider a piece of tire tube or such material.

Here's a pic of the steering joint with the torn rubber boot. When I was still deciding on tractors the salesman made a special point of telling me about the nice rugged steel shield around this joint.(except when you turn left. after all that's only half the time). I have really good directions about taking this apart without damaging anything, probably a one beer job

I read in another section, I believe the Chinese Tractor section, that someone had replaced a power steering boot with an aftermarket shock boot from an auto parts store. I'll be checking at the parts store tomorrow after I measure my boots on the BX, and they come in some wild colors if I remember correctly, hope I can find the right size. I'll update tomorrow.

And all this time I thought you guys were talking about the boots on the tie rod ends.

To me, that looks like a job for a 6" section of old bicycle inner tube and a couple of zip ties.

That's what I'm thinking of doing, after cleaning the U-joint and re-greasing it.

Thanks for the info, guys.
