Tornado hits Ft Leonard Wood New Year's Eve

That same set of storms tossed off a bunch of tornados in the St. Louis area. One of them hit about 1.5 miles from my brother's place in south STL county. No damage to his property, but a number of houses and a strip mall were destoyed.

The last Jan tornado, IIRC, in STL was Jan1967. We were living in St. Ann, an STL suburb near the airport. That sucker hit in the dark about 6pm and tore up houses and a Little League park about 2 blocks from our place. My wife was 8 months pregnant at the time. We survived.

One of the reasons I relocated to CA 20 years ago.

I have never been through an earthquake but suspect they are no fun either. Tornados jump around and are pretty random what they hit.

sounds like you were in more danger than us. Glad you and the wife survived. Coming from Colorado, we knew the dangers of Missouri tornados and still chose to retire here. Now I'm starting to wonder if we'd been better off staying in Colorado. Yes, there are tornados there too but nowhere near where we lived. The only thing we sometimes worried about living in the Rockies were the avalanches but they were so few and far between.

Does you house have a storm shelter? Some of the states out that way require new homes to have a storm shelter. There are companies the are prefabing the shelters if you need one.

We do not get many tornadoes in NC but one is too many. When we add the garage there will be a storm shelter.

I moved to the LA area 20 years ago and experienced 4 or 5 quakes, including the Northridge temblor. One of the quakes was centered under Costa Mesa, about 5 miles from my place (not fun at all). Glad I moved to the North Sac Valley (not as seismically active as So Cal).

Yes sir it does. It's a 6' x 12' all concrete enclosure but I don't see much need for it cause if I'm in a concrete basement anyway it doesn't offer any additional protection. But it was a package deal when we bought the house and the builder said it was going in weather we wanted it or not. Not a bad idea for your new garage because the news said there's been some tornados recently in your area.

Hidey holes are essential in tornado country.
My son and his family live in the Oklahoma Panhandle. They had a 5x8 ft shelter installed in one bay of his 2-car garage. It's a modular unit. The hole is dug with a mini-excavator and the module is set in the hole with a heavy Bobcat. Backfill and its done. It has a steel diamond plate top with the access hatch. Pretty neat. Accommodates 6 adults.
