Interesting info. Thanks.

I'm trying to decipher this data. In Dec07 16,079 two-wheel and 365 four-wheel tractors were sold. It seems to me that the AEM must be lumping tractors with front wheel assist, like my Kubota B7510HST, into the two-wheel category. And the 4-wheel category must refer to the larger ag tractors with true 4-wheel drive. Correct?

A tractor with FWA but based off a traditional 2wd type frame is considered a 2wd. An articulated tractor like Steiger, Deere and Versatile or rigid frame tractor similar to the old Case tractors with crab steering that has full time four wheel drive is what classifies as a 4wd.

Bob or somebody who knows this stuff enlighten me. I have what was sold as a 4 wheel drive tractor. 2 wheel/4 wheel selectable. Are we being told that if the tractor is capable of being switched into 2 wheel drive mode that it isn't "real" 4 wheel drive.

Wouldn't that apply to trucks and cars too? So Subaru and a few passenger cars (and some SUV's) are 4 wheel drive but no pickups, Jeeps, and the like??? All the rock crawlers and 4x4 clubs will be disappointed to get the news.

I thought some of the CUTs made by Kubota were built as 4 wheel drive units not a 2 wheel drive tractor with a changed out front axle etc. I'm definitely NOT an expert on this topic and need to have it explained to me, slowly, using little words.

The publicly published stuff its usually for AG tractors, I don't think I've ever seen it online for compacts.

Kubota calls its tractors 4wd even though they are not "true" 4wd's. They did this to help compact buyers relate to their tractors. Traditional ag companies are different, they were around from the advent of the 2wd tractor, the advent of 4wd tractors and the advent of Mechanical Front Wheel assist. These designations are based on the traditional ag companies which is basically what Neil said but with a lot less words:)

Years ago we used to buy the front end attachments for two wheel drive tractors and put them on for our customers. FWA came about at that time. The farm listing four wheel drives if you look at them all have the front and rear tires the same size!
