Once again this is why you don't hook to any point above the drawbar. He was lucky, only a busted leg and a broken cheekbone.

By the looks of this he went over backwards when he couldn't pull out the tree wh was hooked to. He's a very lucky man! A great example of why you need a ROPS.

Did the tractor spin around after it turned on it's side? Or did it completely roll backwards over him?

Just a guess, but it looks like by the marks on the ground his rear dif was locked but may not of been in 4x4, so he would of gone straight up and slightly to one side before going over backwards, good thing it went to the side other wise it would of been a broke neck/back. Not that 4x4 would have made much difference, but judging by how much chain is there and the ruts that's what it looks like to me.

He had the lower draw bar holes available to connect chain to, wonder why he didn't use it. I've done that before and had the front end come up but was expecting it and was ready with the clutch to prevent a walk over.

Those pictures are the perfect poster child for that problem, almost don't need an explanation. just take one of those pics and place one of those stick figure guys that are on the safety labels all over our tractors now, in there with his stick leg broke in 2 pcs, that would be enough to scare you safe.

It happened 12/06/08 (about a month ago). John is now home recuperating, will be laid up quite awhile. I have only talked to him briefly and I have the same questions you do, why was he hooked at the top link of the 3 point hitch, why was it not in 4wd. I believe it came directly over backwards. When I got there he was laying parallel to the tractor about where the hard hat is. Also the tree would have pulled easier if he had pulled from the other end. This whole episode happened about 400 feet from me but he was hidden by the machine shed. He called 911 from his cell phone, so my (and his wifes) first clue was when I saw the ambulance and fire truck pull in.

I hope neighbor heals up aright. You might want to talk him into investing into a ROPS.

Hes a lucky guy, broken bones will heal. Usually these types of stories have a much worse ending. A reminder to be safe and have ROPS for sure.

Looks like the muffler survived the rollover, too.
