Flail Mower Toughest Flail Mower: Gearmore?

Allen, how about just order it with the correct hammers already installed? Most folks who changes a full set of knives/hammers say that it's not rocket science but you should expect to a full complement of bashed/skinned knuckles. I imagine it's not a fun job and not something you want to do on a regular basis. If your dealer wants the sale bad enough, I'm sure he'll make the change for you.

Superduper, the reason I've got all these questions about changing hammers is because I've found a new flail with the "Y" knives. I wanted hammers. The guy says buy the mower as is and he will ship me a set of the hammers with the flail.

I get an extra set of knives. Some day I will have to change them anyway.


I don't know. I'm still working on it. I'm trying to buy one this week.

Get one with "P" type hammers , place the branches a little wider and do two runs , one up one back . It will take the same time and make it easier on the gear.

Who makes a selection of hammers? I have a Rears SPF with a heavy duty rotor and heavy edge cutting knives and it isnt agressive enuf. I will need hammers with a 4.5" span - minimum.

I need to mow a soccer field and get the smoothest cut possible. Is a flail the answer? Total cut area maybe 2 to 2 1/2 acres. Size and brand? I have either a 33 or 75 HP tractor I can use. Thanks

Hammer knives make this 48" flail by Bomford-Turner with 1/4" skin a real monster when it comes to eating wood. I have dropped it on trees from the top and it never slows down till it reaches about 5" thick truck, which then requires a little bit more time to eat them up. About 90 hp going to the pto pump doesn't hurt anything...
