Spreader Tow Behind Spreader vs 3ph

Not too bad. Considering the tow behind you showed in the photo is $200, I'd say you are definitely getting more than twice the spreader for twice the money. Seems ok. Guess it depends how much $$ a guy wants to spend.

Get a broadcast spreader not a drop spreader for field work, you'll cover the area way quicker. Have a look at www.easternfarmmachinery.com they sell herd, vicon, thompson, and gandy drop spreaders and have pricing on their site.

Mike,

Check out TSC/Family/Quality stores in your area for a 3 pt broadcast spreader. Probably get something similar for a little less money.

Your fertilizer dealer should have spreaders you can rent or use and you can have the lime and fertilize brought over in bulk gravity wagons with augers to unload into a 3pt. spreader. We usually have the trucks dump it right on to the ground and load our spreader with the loader which is faster when you are moving 40 tons of lime. We use the powdered lime because it covers evenly but is quite dusty but could get the pelletized lime also. Your horses won't be affected by the lime or fertilzer as they will not eat enough to hurt them as it taste bad.

I average at least 3000# of pellitized lime per year, using a 200# capacity drop spreader, with aerators pulled behind my rider when I mow the lawn. Dual duty - mow and lime in one pass and the drop spreader has much better control than a broadcast spreader. I also buy my lime at the end of the season for the next year - bought 40# bags for $.40 at CT Farm and Country this year, bought all they had at 2 different stores.

Once every 10 years I do the hay fields, buying bulk pulverized limestone by the 10 wheeler load, (20+ tons at less than $10/ton) and borrow a pto driven spreader for a weekend.
