Tow capacity for my truck

Fellas, how can I find out what the tow capacity for my truck is? I have a number that I got from someplace but I have no idea where from and it seem kinda high.

Truck
Dodge 2003 1500
6cyl motor
2wd
reg cab
long box

For some reason I thought the tc was just over 8000 lbs but it seems a lot for the truck.

Any advice?

(Note, I got this truck when it had 7000km on it and there was no manual)

Use the Dodge site's tow guide to find out your towing capacity.

Assuming your truck is an automatic, you can tow 3,550lbs (3,150 for 5-speed). No V6 should ever be used to tow over 8,000lbs, that is just a blown headgasket waiting to happen.

My 03 1500 is rated at 8,550lbs but that is a 4x4 short bed V8 HEMI, it tows real nicely!

I am a boat dealer and have the tow capacity for all trucks and cars for the last 10 years. According to my info you truck with a manual tranny is 3,150# and auto is 3,600#. Sorry for the bad news. If it had the 4.7 V8 manual tranny it would be 4,550# with 3.55 gears, the same motor with 3.92 gears would be 5,550#. Same motor with a auto gives you 6,500# for 3.55 and 7,500# for the 3.92 gears. According to my info if you get the 5.9 360 V8 it was only available with a auto tranny and the tow limit is 7,450# with 3.55 gears and 8,450# with 3.92 gears.

I actually have a book here at my desk. Just like looking up a oil filter at Auto Zone. Just go Dodge, 2003, 1500 Ram, bed length, motor, tranny type, engine, axle ratio, ect. Pretty handy for us so we make sure we keep our customers legal. It will even get real specific like a deduction for larger wheels, ect. Its put together by a leading boating magazine. They update it every year.

Yes, I am a pilot. Just sell boats part time to friends and family. Really just a broker but do a lot of boat maintenance and trailer maintenance since my flying schedule is usually 3 on 4 off so I have quite a bit of down time.


Your truck is rated at 8,250# and was only available in a Auto tranny and 3.92 gears. That is if it is indeed a 2007 Ram Quad Cab 5.7 Hemi 4x4 1500. If its a 2 wheel drive it was available in 3.55 gears and the tow rating is 7,550# and 3.92 gears rated at 8,550#

Like I said before in post #4 I only have tow ratings going back about 10 years. You are a funny guy though. If I had a classic like that I would be towing it with a Powerstroke to show, not letting it tow.
