Phred:

It was a gasser (360 V-8). What a dog. No power and a guzzler.

I agree with soundguy. Get a good full-size pickup and 16' trailer. You need to do all of your weight calculations to figure exactly which pickup. If your Gross weight of your trailer and equipment is below 9k then you could get by with a 1/2 ton pickup. If you are above 9k you'd be better off with a 3/4 ton pickup. If you have a bumper pull trailer a weight dist. hitch would be a must as well in my book.

I don't have either the truck or the trailer.
Do hate to buy a truck when I already have 4 perfectly good import pick ups !

Richard,

You may be right. I have an older ford 7.3 (pre power stroke) that has been worked hard and abused and still runs well.

For me the dodge had some nice features:
Mainly the one ton SRW crew cab with a short box is shorter over all than the ford. If you could see the parking lot I have at work you would know why this is important. A long box 1 ton would not work.

Also the cummings will run a long time, and there is nothing quite like 325 hp and 600 ft-lbs of torque in a 5Klb truck!

Fred - my 04 2500 4X4 quad cab with the cummins weighs 7000 pounds empty (weighed it myself on a certified scale). Gets 21 MPG hiway (if I can keep it under 70, pretty hard to do /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif) 18 combined, but drops to 14 when I pull the 3 horse slant load gooseneck @ 70 MPH.

I am not about to start PU wars again but you might want to consider the NEW 05 Toyota TACOMA. It has considerable improvements over the previous model. It is larger, heavier, considerably more powerful with a much higher tow rating. The rating is something over 6,000 lbs now. It also achieves decent mileage. Not relying on the artical from a major magazine that describe it as "Glaicers may come and go but a Toyota remains a Toyota" and " bigger and more powerfuller and a whole bunch more ers" etc., I decided to drive one. It was a great ride and with the new 245 horse 4.0 V6 the thing flat scoots and like all Toyotas feels rock solid. Available in standard, access and 4 door models. It is nearly as large as my Tundra. Our Jeep pulls just fine up to 5,000 lbs and the Tundra pulls this like it ain't even back there. Good luck. J

I stand corrected.
Somewhere I thought I had looked it up and the weight of this short box 2 wheel drive dodge was under 6 K. But it is really
6500 lbs according to dodge offical specs.
It is a lot lighter than my old ford even thought it is a 1 ton SRW and my old one was a 3/4 ton.

I have scalled it but never empty.

Either way it will suck the doors off of any other truck I have every owned.
On occasion it can be fun to play with people in cars that assume they can sneak in front of you since you are so big and slow. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
You may weight twice what they do but you have more than twice there hp, and these turbo diesels are not lacking in accelration.

Also the ford is really not a power stroke anymore. Those V8s are gone, and the new ford is radically different from the old.
Only time will tell if it holds up as well as the old 7.3 V8.

The difference between the jeep and the tundra....
that is less than the difference between the tundra and a diesel full sized pickup.

Maybe the origional poster does not need that. But the tundra and titan are not in the same league.

This is from a guy that loves nissian products. Its just the fact.

"I will be towing about 5500 lb, but am looking at a rating of 7000 so as to not tempt fate."

Yeppers and this is what the original post said since we are talking "original poster". No where did I claim or he or anyone claim that the Tundra or Nissan or whatever were in the sam,e league of tow vehicle as the 1 ton Dodge, howerver, he did ask for a vehicle that could tow 5,500 lbs and HE felt a 7,000 lb rating would give him room to spare. I cannot disagree with his original thoughts. I don't think he needs that much vehicle for 5,500 lbs either. Like I said, the new Tacoma and any of a number of the new mid size trucks including the Dodge Dakota and maybe the Chevy/GMC mid size could pull 5,500 lbs. Also, any number of 1/2 ton PUs could tow it easily including the Ford, Chevy, Tundra and Nissan which has a 9,000 lb tow rating.
One thing, you must make sure that both your GVW and your tow weight are within limits and the tongue weight as well. A person needing to tow a boat or horse trailer or whatever plus a vehicle loaded with gear and people certainly could remain within the tow limit but exceed the GVW thus making it wise to get a larger truck. Have a goulish Halloween, g'nite /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif!

PS, the tow limit on the Jeep is 5,000 lbs so it will not do for a 5,500 lb load however it does very well right to it's 5,000 lb limit--no sweat. J

new 245 horse 4.0 V6 the thing flat scoots

It may scoot some going downhill and with a wind but compared to a 300 hp 8 cylinder engine it's not going to tow very well. Put 7000 lbs. behind that pickup and you will probably be lucky to get 6 miles to the gallon with a V6.

Fred.

The new 6.0 litre powerstroke is also a V-8. I'm not sure where you say the V-8 is gone? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif According to international this engine will last longer the 7.3. I agree only time will tell.
