Towed PTO attachment hookup dimensions

After towing a fertlizer cart the other day which had measurements for the distance of the PTO hookup to the drawbar I realized there are specific dimensions for these connections. I don't remember them offhand, but after talking to my brother who is a farmer he said that you run the risk of breaking your PTO housing on your tractor if you do not follow them. I assume this only applies to towed attachments and not 3 point attachments. This may have been obvious to some, but I thought it might save someones driveline if mentioned. If someone has the actual dimensions (different for 540rpm and 1000rpm PTO) they might post them here to remind others. I think it is 12-14 inches for the end of the PTO shaft to the hole in the draw bar, but I am not sure.

I saw a warning sticker on the cart and measured mine to be sure. I had to pull the draw bar out to tow position to make the dimensions correct.

Actually.. I think the 3pt may be more at riskk than towed. For towed equipment.. they usually have a lift cyl that moves a rockshaft dropping a wheel to rais the implement. In that.. the pto shaft doesn't compress or expand much.

On a 3pt equipment.. the pto shaft can express and contract quite a few inces.. The 10' mower onthe back of my NH 7610s compresses 6" from mow to lift position. I had to cut my shaft down.

If you don't, and the shaft bottoms out, you can put pressure on your tractors pto stub.. usually damaging seals, bearings, and other expensive things.

Some workers lifted a rear tiller on my stepfathers JD 2240 tractor with too long a shaft.. pushed the pto shaft into the rear end. We had to split the tractor.. replace all the independed clutch packs, a few snap rings, bearings, and lots seals and gaskets. Almost 800$worth of parts.. not counting a couple days of our time.
