New guy with a towing question.

I am looking at a 2004 Chevy 2500HD with the 6.0 liter gas engine to tow a Ford 3000. Ballasted weight of the 3000 is roughly 7000#.

GVWR of the 2500HD is 9200# and GCWR is 18500# and max trailer weight is 12500#.

I am thinking about bumper pulling the 3000 with a 10000# GVWR trailer that weighs around 2500#.
That would give me a total trailer weight of 9500# with the tractor and the trailer.

I should be below the GVWR for both the truck and loaded trailer and within their respective capabilities.

What do you guys think?

Towing specifications seem to be hard to pinpoint and this is the best calculation I can come up with.

Thank!

I have the same truck, but it's an 02. I haul a 4025 mahindra with fel and brushhog on a 20' pintle hitch trailer. She pulls it fine on the open road but she doesn't like it.
How far do you plan to tow?

I tow my 3000 (loaded 14.9"x 28" tires, 730 loader, and Ford HD 6' brush cutter) on a 10k# rated 5 th wheel trailer pulled by a truck with a gcwr of 21,000 including the 5th wheel oh and gvwr 9900#

Unless i'm missing something it looks OK to me...

No more than 50 miles at a time. Flat freeway mostly.

You should be ok, just take her easy. That's about how far I go when I cut the field at my work. I really wish I had bought a gooseneck though.

All things the being equal, the gooseneck would pull much better?

I may rent the trailer to start and then when it comes time to buy, decide on a gooseneck.

From what I hear mainly in here, there's no comparison.

Most people who have towed both prefer the GN or 5th wheel and GNs can be had so that the ball just flips over when not in use giving a flat pick-up bed which is a VERY nice feature. A 5th wheel has a higher total weight rating but for most it is a complete non issue...

There are others who are just as adamant that a bumper pull is just as good at pulling and leaves the bed open for other uses..

IMO GN is the best overall set up for most...

Should be just fine. Not going to win any races but we tow our Ford 861, about the same tractor, all the time with my Nissan Titan and before that a F150.

The issue with a GN and a gas truck is the trailers added weight. It will gain 1500# or so over a BP. Then there is the loss of bed space.

I vote for gooseneck:thumbsup:

But now I am looking at tilt trailers:

These are HOT DIP Galvanized and can be made with a gooseneck front, this one has the Rumbar deck:
