Last week I had to fill up at Denio, Nevada. 30 gallons (truck has a 36 gallon tank) @ $6.62 per gallon = $198.60. So darn near $200 to fill my truck with regular.
In 1973 I drove a Ford van from Pennsylvania to Nevada. 2,652 miles - total cost for gas for the trip was $90.14, averaging 12.85 mpg.
Hard to wrap my mind about the difference in cost!

I have an older (1999) Ford F250 SD with the 7.3. The max payload of this year is a low 1800 pounds. I understand that with a GN, 25% of the weight of the trailer is on the pickup as opposed to about 16% of a bumper pull trailer. A lot of the LQ I've seen where the dry weight is actually given are at least 5000 pounds for an all aluminum trailer. That doesn't leave me much wiggle room for horses, gas, water, hay, passengers, etc. I love my truck and it's paid for so I continue to look for an all aluminum LQ, 2 horses, with a 4' shortwall. In the meantime I go everywhere in a simple 2 horse stock side bumper pull. I've camped in the back of my current trailer and it's doable. My truck is right on the verge of being a little squatty/nose up with 2 horses in the trailer, so I'm going to go back to using the weight distribution hitch I had for my 1/2 ton truck. Like your rig, my truck loves to visit the gas station.

Very difficult to do isn't it? I know I've been motoring my Kawasaki KLR 650 ADV bike this summer for errands and it gets between 70 and 80 mpg and that don't hurt all that bad.

I am limiting my horse excursions to a 35 mile radius of home. Fortunately we have some great horse friendly parks nearby. One trip to town per day, etc. My truck is my daily.

I just hauled mine 80 miles one way to ride two days ago at a friends place and I'm gonna tell you that one hurt!
Beautiful ride, good times with some guys I hadn't spent much time with since a LONG time ago, expanded my circle of riding crew, put some new trail into my map app.... but that buck 45 one way drive was a long one at the end of the day.
I'd do it again tomorrow though given I had my truck full of fuel.

But a 1973 dollar would be the same as $6.68 today so the $90.14 in 1973 is equal to $602.13 today

My F250 has the 48 gallon tank. Ouch!!
