Does anybody know of some good replacement mirrors for a 1996 Chevy truck. The stock ones are really not wide enough for pulling my box trailer, which is 102" wide.
I did find some but really did not want to spend $529 on mirrors.

How often do you tow?

I have some that I used to use on my '97 before I bought the '99. If your truck is like mine and have the black plastic mirrors you could do the same thing. These were shaped to contour around the stock mirror, but stuck out past the each mirror about 4" or so. Worked real well pulling our camper. Best thing was, I didn't modify the truck. When we got to the camp ground, took them off, and didn't have to worry about someone taking them off for me. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I sold the truck but I kept the mirrors. Dad & Mom are looking at trucks between '96 & 2001 so they may end up using them, otherwise I would let you have them. I think I paid about $30 a piece for them. I bought them for a car accessory shop, but Wally world used to carry them too.

Here is a link to an example of the ones I used Slide on Mirrors

There are different ones that just slide over the exsiting mirror and extend out just far enough so you can see behind. They are not expensive and install in minutes. They are not the best of mirrors but work.

I had a set of the slide on mirrors but didn't like them. Vibration, small mirror and overall, kind of chincy feeling. I found a set of factory trailer tow mirrors at a salvage yard (new, in box) for $30. Took the others off and drilled ( /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif) for the new. I like them but would much prefer something that telescoped (like the newer Ford SuperDuty).

The trailer tow mirrors are large, don't vibrate and are wide enough to see the rear of the trailer for backing. Large enough to mount a small, convex blind spot mirror on too.

When I put the camper away for winter storage I swing the mirrors in to the narrow position but that's a pain to do (and adjust) everytime I tow.

Did you try a salvage yard?

I have mirrors on my 93 GMC that look exactly like the originals but you can loosen a set screw and slide them out. I am trying to remember where I got them. If you visit salvage yards, look for mirrors that have a set screw on the mirror hub. I am fairly sure these are aftermarket since if they were a factory option I would have bought them with my truck.

I too have tried to use the slide on ones. It confuses me when one car turns into two cars /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
I will try and take a pic tonight of the ones that are on it. I thought of getting the ones that bolt into the door, but what do you do with the ones that were already there?
The only time I drive this truck is when pulling trailer 1 Ton Dually 4x4 with 454. Not something that you would want to daily commute in!
