Yup - we are on the same page. I have 3 teenagers and a little one - and I have fought and am fighting the battle every day. My kids think I'm an ogre at times and the DW and I get looks and comments all the time about how strict we are. Coaching youth sports for the last 15 years has left me in complete disgust. But my 18 yo told me the other day that he is starting to appreciate the fact that he is being made to carry his own weight in the world - compared to his friends. But I have to tell you - it is not (and was not) an easy road.

I think it also may seem different depending on where you are geographically. As I am 30 minutes from D.C., I may experience a completely different demographic than you - and constantly feel I am in the minority when it come to my beliefs and values. I feel lucky when I find neighbors and co-workers that share the same mentality - but they are few and far between. Part of the reason I enjoy this site so much - people with similar mentality. Funny though, if I go another 30 minutes south, all rural, I find my type of people

I live between Wilmington, DE & Phila, PA. I also have coached sports for a while (football & boys Lacrosse). I also see the same things as you, but I also see a lot that gives me hope that we can return this country to a country which rewards hard work and frowns upon laziness and handouts unless it's a life and death matter.

Had a 1983 Nisson PU once, Head gasket went out at 81,000 miles... traded it in for a 1994 Ford F-150, too many parts replaced to mention (currently at 91,000 miles) Had a 1977 MGB prior to the 1983 Nisson... Boy I could change a head gasket on that thing in two hours... lots of practice! Son used to have a job in high school pushing around a wheelchair bound student... made a few dollars a week! Worked in food service at the local college for a year or so and worked washing dishes at a local food service co. Runs the local gocart track at a major resort now and is a full time student in college... His response to his little sister (16 now) when she wanted to earn a few dollars in high school is to enjoy your life while you can... once you start working, you can never stop!

My children are not old enough for me to have the pleasure of coaching yet but I am with you guys on what you see. I just hope I can make a difference in some kids life, including mine. By the way, I get over your way all the time Duane. I fly into the Coatsville Airport a few times a month. They have a real deer problem, you need to hunt more.:)

I'm 25 minutes of Brandywine (Coatesville) Airport. Just a little fun factoid: Did you know "Coatesville" was named after Moses Coates, a quaker who bought a large piece of land which is now the center of the town and started the famous "Lukens Steel" plant, which is now owned by "Mittal".

It was once a thriving little city. Now it's basically a crime riddled slum with crumbling buildings and an old steel mill.

Yea - I'm not all doom and gloom like my first post - I have commented many times to wife that "Hey, that is a great kid, despite his parents.....".

And you do have an impact on the kids - I go to high school events and all of 'em come up to you chat and tell you how they are doing. You are part of their life from the time they were six - now they are in college - good feeling....

There is hope - it just SEEMS like for every hardworking, ethical, common sense person I come across there are 5 that fall into the other categories.

I guess I should have been more clear when I said Coatesville. The airport I fly into is the Coatesville, Chester County Airport off Route 30 Business. Brandywine Airport is not large enough for the airplanes I fly being only 3,300' long and we need at least of 5,000'. We stay near Brandywine, usually in Exton, at the Holiday Inn Express next to the Kohls and across from the Mall.

OK, I know where that airport is as well. I have a friend who lives near there. I live 15 minutes from the H/I you stay at.
