Toyota sales off more than GM or Ford

I like the Government Motors thing. They dubbed them that in our local paper and took flack over it from the Union die hard's that lost their jobs 10 years ago. They are still die hard Gm because its still a cash cow for them.

Well I'm glad you asked. The Tundra is 75% US/Canada sourced. Engine and Transmission made in the good 'ol USA!

That 82% USA for your truck is most likely US/Canada. Maybe you have been looking at older Toyota trucks.

By the way GM has had a joint venture with Toyota for years making the Tacoma, Corolla, and Pontiac Vibe out in California. American made is what matters! :)

Actually, it's not. It's where the profits go that matters.

I would not say I hate GM, I currently own a Saturn and use it as my daily driver. I just was not happy with them when it came to warrenty claims and customer support. The only reason I got another GM in the Saturn was it is out of warranty and it was a good buy.

So to say I hate GM is not true. I hate the dealer I bought my first GM truck from and he is now out of business. I had problems with my second GM truck but it was covered under warranty. I just ran away from it after 9 months because I felt like there were more headaches to come with it. The only reason I was lured back was the cost difference between it and a Ford. There was $6K-8K difference at the time in 1 tons. I will gladly pay that premium now until I find something better like a Nissan or Toyota in a HD Diesel truck.

Thats hilarious. Anyone who posts like 500 anti-GM posts is a poster child for hating GM. :D You've told the same story about your former GM's like 100 times.

BTW: I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for Toyota or Nissan to build a 1-ton. Toy just scrapped it's plans after a lot of fanfare on the internet about building diesel 1-tons. ;)

I'd much rather get excited about a company like IH taking a shot at entering the 1-ton diesel market than another foreign company. In the state of the US economy today, we need domestic manufacturing by American companies, not japanese, Chinese or Korean companies.

I don't want to see GM go under. I just want to see them go Bankrupt and be done with the UAW. I think the only way they will be able to survive is to make cuts from top to bottom, that includes upper management. This bail out is just a quick fix that will fail if not managed right. I have very little confidence that it will be managed right since they could not manage the company to begin with.

As for me telling my story again, it was said there was more to the story. I can tell you there was not. The motor I could have prevented blowing up so badly but I really did not care. I was mad a 1 year old truck was having problems and I was not about to walk, which I ended up doing anyway. The transfer case just happened. The problems I had with my Dmax were well documented in the early engines and improvements have been made to make it the power plant it is today. I am not sure what happened with the paint but like I said on my second go around with a new GM the warranty work was done no problem. I just did not like the idea of having a new truck with problems like it had so I went back to what I had faith in.

I have not complained about my Saturn even though it has had a few problems like a stuck sunroof, a power window motor go out, a transmission park/neutral safety switch fail, and a ball joint give out. All since last April. This has been in the first 8,000 miles I owned it but I knew going in its a used car and a good buy so I could afford to put some money into it. Its out of warranty and I will continue to fix it as long as it does not out way the value of the car. All in all its a good car and I would drive it anywhere while getting good economy and reasonable reliability.

I had a 1996? Cavalier 2.2L that went thru a haeadgasket at around 100000Kms as well. I think those engines were well known to go through head gaskets. After that head gasket repair, the car went on to over 320000KM without any other major repairs. I just sent it to the crusher this summer. The engine still ran, but the body was rotten. It was pretty good car :D

A little off topic...

Trade Publications had a story on how the aftermarket came up with a much more robust gasket... 3 x the cost of OEM...

Toyota's benefits are excellent... some of the best in the business. The idea is to have excellent benefits without being lavish. That way when the economy goes south there's some money in the bank to pay the workers and not lay them off. It's a great idea... and being put to the test. We'll see how it goes.
According to what they finally came up with I think they said that Toyota workers made about three dollars more on the hour than the domestic auto worker made, but I would say that there was another benefit that the union worker had that maybe the toyota worker didn't get but in the long run I'd say both got about the same. You take the $3 less per hour that the uaw made and pay that into a retirement account I would say that would make that a wash, but if the company decided not to honor their agreement and to put off, delay, and fight to not pay until they was made to then eventually their delinquent debt would add up quick and that is what the companies many of them have did, but the big three said that that part of it was funded fully. If that is the case then the problem possibly lies in the health care insurance costs, I have always thought that having a health insurance company being the way of providing health care for it's employees and retirees is a bad idea. I have seen a much better way of supplying this coverage but it had a few problems that could have been addressed easily but instead of doing that they decided to go with a insurance provider for their coverage they bought into their teaser rates and soon the costs mushroomed out of control.

I would expect that the non-unionized auto manufacturers closely monitor the wage/benefits packages negotiated by the UAW and the Big 3 makers so that they are more or less competitive, 1 - for attracting new employees and 2 - keeping the ones they have happy and less likely to try and organize themselves. Where I work there is a mix of unionized and non-unionized (non-mgmt) employees. After a contract renewal, the company gives raises/cost of living allowance increases to the non-unionized staff in line with what has just been negotiated for the unionized employees.
