I am looking to buy some replacement wheels for my truck. I have a 1996 Tacoma 4wd, and I have a wheel that is bent, and another that takes more weight to balance than I like to see. I tried the local salvage yards, but all they had listed were wheels that were in very rough shape (rust, etc.) I don't mind paying for a set of new wheels, as I plan to keep this truck for awhile. All I am looking for is plain steel wheels, no fancy alloys, etc. Can anyone give me a direction on where to find these? Not having any luck locally.
Thanks, Will

Try the places that sell the fancy wheels. They usually have takeoffs form the trucks they have upgraded. Often, you'll get the tires, as well, usually for a good price because the previous owner is stuck with them. A lot of the time they're brand new.

Here's a set of 4 - 15 x7 - 6 lug steel wheels for a Toyota on EBay -- Toyota wheels current bid for all 4 is $50 plus shipping - probably around $20 per wheel. Do a search on Ebay for "Toyota wheels" and see some of the others listed.

I just found another set on EBay -- aluminum 15 x 7, Buy it Now for $199, $65 shipping from Tennessee. More wheels

Here's some ideas for you.

1. Take offs. Take offs are the stock wheels and tires taken off of new vehicles when the custom wheels and tires are put on. A little looking around will locate a dealer in these. They also usually have seats etc too.

2. I use to be pretty fluent in wheelchangeease. I knew that Falcon or Mustang wheels with the four lug pattern fit on stuff like Triumph threes and fours with four lug patterns etc. Nascar pattern, five on five, came on big Fords, big GM cars etc. But that's been awhile.

But I do believe all of your six lug wheels are interchangeable as far as lug pattern goes. What gets to be a glitch in the get along is the offset. So chances are most likely you can watch the paper and see a set of Nissan or Mitsubishi or Chevrolet four by wheels and get exactly what you want. One other thing, center hole size, you want the four by four version because their center hole is larger. Two wheel drive versions don't have the same size center hole.

Keep in mind your sixteen inch wheels are going to be the most common I believe. And finding good four ply tires can be expensive, they assume you're well heeled and drving a trick SUV. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Six plys are wasted on lil four wheelers like your Tacoma in my opinion.

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised if you can find a take off dealer.

Takeoffs! First, try Toyota. They take the stock wheels off all the time, and put fancy ones on. You can find takeoffs tire/rims with less than 20 miles on them. If your Toyota dealer does not have them, ask what tire shop they deal with, and go there.

Someone mentioned checking what other brands will fit; isn't the Toyota six lug pattern the same as GM?

The wreckers can put a request out on the hotline too. They can get the parts from other wreckers.

You could put a want add in your local paper or penny-adds.

I bought a second set of wheels for my 98 Dodge Ram on EBay last year. I paid $150 plus $90 shipping from Arizona to Mississippi. I had a hard time finding a set of rims locally that would fit my truck AND were in decent shape. I wanted to have one set with street tires and one set with mud tires. Now I can change tires any time I like.

Ebay. I found a spare set for my 2003 Dodge Dakota for $200...and even a set for my 1957 Dodge half ton! Watch those shipping charges; some sellers will get you with shipping and special handling charges, so ask before bidding.
