I was just looking for some thoughts or experiences on these "kind of new" machines. I am currently looking to purchase one and am looking at the Caterpillar 277 & 287, as well as the Takehuchi TL 140 & 150, and also the ASV RC 100.Any thoughts or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know if you have looked at the Gehl CTL series. The CTL 80 has 101 hp Yanmar motor. I don't know how that compares to the others you are looking at.

look at my thread below about the 463 Bobcat. There was some good feedback both on skidsteers and tracked loaders.

The Gehl & Mustang track loaders are the same as the Takehuchi loaders, just painted yellow and re-named.

I did not know that. I thought they were designed and built by Gehl. At any rate they are a very good machine and back a while ago we got 5 right off the semi and sold them all within a week.

Tags,

Here's a link to an overview of the market, in case you haven't seen it. Takeuchi was the pioneer way ahead of the rest so they may know a few things the others are just learning. There seems to be a lot of obsolete models and Gehl (Takeuchi) is quick to tell you that Cat stopped selling track loaders for awhile because of some drive problems.

I went down to Louisville Saturday to a Landscaping show where they have demonstration areas. Got to operate a Gehl CTL 60 and a Cat 247. ASV was there but they just had their own operator doing demonstrations. They all looked good and performed impressively with the right operator.(not me)

The thing to watch is track life. They are talking about 1500 hours or so , depending on how you use it and if you keep it off the pavement. At $3000 or $4000 per set...

If your still looking for a tracked skid steer I noticed there is a CAT 257 and 277 for sale on ebay right now. Low hours it looks like.

What about the T190, T200 or the T300 Melrose Bobcat? So far,the new tracked Bobcats are holding up better than others.

Don't know why, but they are holding up the best in the rental fleets. I like the wide tracks. After having the track rigs, I perfer the lower cost of the ones with hard rubber tires or foam filled tires. We hardly ever work in the mud anyway.

I know a couple of guys who have had the Bobcat machines and had some problems so I am a little leary of em'. I have a friend with a Cat 277 and he loves it, although I am more interested in the 287, which out of all the track machines has vertical lift and a 10' 8" dump height. The track system on the Cat and ASV are basically the same, ASV sold Cat the rights to their undercarriage, but there is something to be said about the simplicity of the Bobcat and Tachehuchi undercarriages.

Tags,
I agree that the vertical lift would be really nice. I use my 216 to load manure and chips into a spreader. That vertical lift would be really handy.

Tags, I too live in CT and I am in the middle of demoing all of the styles of tracked skid steers. Today I used the Bobcat T300 which is the biggest in the bobcat tracked line it it was a pretty good machine. However, i didn't like the one speed, i think two speeds would be superior. I also didn't like how they have the controls set up, the hand controls are very jumpy and in my mind useless compared to the foot pedals. Last week i tried a ASV RC-100 and fell in love with its two speeds, standard low-high flow hydralics and the standard power-tach plate. It also has about 20 hp over the other models i tried. ASV was also the first with tracks so I think they might be ahead in the game since they built the machine around the tracks. The only thing I don't like on the ASV is the rear. There is little or no guarding around the radiator which the other manufactors have because of their skid-steer design.I called my salesman today about the Cat 287 since it is the biggest and closest to what i want and he was gonna try and bring out a demo unit for me to try. I couldn't understand that even though CAT supplies the motor to ASV RC100 at 100 hp, the Cats biggest 287 has around 80 hp.After trying the bobcat and the ASV I know that it will be the ASV or maybe the CAT. They have a suspension and they share the same piolet controls which are by far the best controls in the industry. I will probably buy in the next week so I will keep u updated. Who's ur Cat salesman??

John,
I have tried out the ASV,Takeuchi, and am going to try the Cat 287,although I have a friend who has a 277 and I would imagine the 287 runs just about the same even though it has a slightly different undercarriage than the 277. The ASV was nice, especially the speedy part of the 2 speeds, but I didn't particularly like the massive amount of rear end that sticks out the back beyond the tracks, it looks like it could be a problem when backing up, and I wouldn't give the fiberglass hood much of a chance either. Also the bucket did not seem to have much roll-back to it, which seemed to result in losing material while in transport, and with the bucket raised all the way it did not seem to have much "reach" while trying to load a truck, my biggest gripe though was the serviceability of it, it is hard to locate the dipstick, much less get your hand on it, and getting to the filters looked as though it could be a bit frustrating. The Takeuchi was also nice, had self leveling bucket but no option to shut it off, which tends to be quite annoying while trying to power rake or use other implements. The track system is much simplier, but does not offer the ride that the ASV or Cat does, but I could see it being a little more resistant to dammage, and again the serviceability of this machine is better than the ASV but still didn't look great. The Cat seems to have gotten the hint that when it comes time for service make it as user friendly as possible, all the filters are located right at the rear of the machine, and draining the oil is a snap, as is access to the radiator since the fan is hydraulically driven and can fold up out of the way,the biggest drawback to the Cat is that it only has one speed and no high flow option. I'm not sure when I'm going to demo the Cat, hopefully sometime this week or next, and my salesmans name is Steve Fritz. Keep me posted on how you decide, the more feedback the merrier.

Yeah i see what you mean about servicing the ASV. I just sent the T300 back and I have to say that I like how the tracks are set up, (the simplicity anyway), for the winter time. But the track design also gives it a rougher ride which can lead to spillage. Now I just have to demo the 287 and I think I will have it down to what I want.

John,
I was just curious to see if you had demoed the 287 yet? I am supposed to get one for a demo sometime this week. If you did, what were your impressions?

I used the little ASV RC30 all day today. It was pretty nice to run. I liked the ride better than the skid steers I have used.
