I rented a 15,000# Hitachi for a job today. Man did I underestimate the power and weight required for stump removal! I thought that size machine would be enough to pull stumps and load them into a demo container...WRONG! What size excavator would you consider the minimum to dig large stumps? I know for sure that I will be adding a PREMIUM for stump removal in the future. I wasted a lot of time today cleaning dirt off of stumps so that I could lift them into the container without tipping on my ear. Next job I get that involves stumps of any size I want to get an excavator that can pick up large stumps and shake them like a rag doll! Would a 25,000# machine be enough?

Depends on what size and type of stumps your working, Are they pine or hard wood. Are youe expecting to pull them out or dig around them first. stumping with a 15 000 pound machine does take a while if they are bicg. I run a 300 Komatsu alot and its has a time with 30 inch oak stumps. Theres alot of variable to your problem. stump type and size soil type, bucket length and width and so fourth.

I also live in western washington and I used a JD120 for some clearing and it was too small. I dug up some fir stumps that were around 30"dbh and I could barely pick them up once I got them out of the ground. For stumps of this size, I wouldn't use anything smaller than a 160 or 200 size machine. They are expensive to rent and move, but you can sure do a lot of work in a day with one.
